I am tring to do my family tree. My grandfather was Benjamin Rourke (Rorke) from Brierfield (Toole) ,was) born approx. 1889/90, married my grandmother Mary Lowry from Mahanagh in 1918. Their children were Patrick, Mary. Bridget and Benjamin.  My great grandparents were Thomas Rourke (Rorke)  born1862 in County Galway and Sarah Mills born 1864 from Bilston, Staffs. He also had sisters called Bridget and May and possibly a brother called John. I am now trying to trace the parents of my great grandfather, I think my great great grandfather may be called Michael Rourke who acquired Brierfield (Toole) in 1855, Any information would be a great help.

Abbeyknockmoy church records do not begin until 1880 so there is no baptismal record for Thomas and he was born right before civil registration started in 1864.

I found this death index record for a Michael Rorke in the Tuam registration district (Brierfield (Toole)) is in the Tuam district. Possibly it is for the father of Thomas.

You can get a copy of this record from the GRO (see my other note). It will show the name of the informant which could be Thomas if he took over the farm.

  • hi,

In 1901 Benjamin ROARKE was living with his grandmother Mary, and an unmarried son John, who is likely Benjamins father ??

In 1911 the household is the same 3 people, and it states Benjamin was born in England, yet in 1901 it states Galway as place of birth...

  • hi,

I have a note that tells me Abbeyknockmoy records begin in 1821...

I certainly have one dated 31 JUL 1823...

I have a cousin that went to the church and photographed records for me.

    Regards,

  • Liz:

Looks like my normally reliable reference book is incorrect. I use Brian Mitchell's " A Guide to Irish Parish Registers" which shows 1880 for Abbeyknockmoy. However, based on Sean's comment, I checked the Mormon Churches site at www.familysearch.org and their microfilm for Abbeyknockmoy baptisms starts in 1821.

Glad you are going to Abbeyknockmoy in two months. By the way, the National Library plans to put the RC parish registers online for free searching sometime this summer.
