Crawford of Ederney

PRONI has a lease dated 22.9.1810 (D238/18) for a Brien of Keenogue, relating to land in Gargadis that he evidently owned or had a superior lease to:

"Lease for 21 years or the life of William McAloon or which ever lasts the longest of land in Keenogue, Co. Tyrone. Rent £22 10s. and six days' work of man and horse or twelve shillings in lieu therefore if demanded. Robert Brien, Keenogue Parish of Kilskerry, Co. Tyrone, farmer to William McAloon, Gargadis, Co. Tyrone".

What denomination were these families?

The families were Church of Ireland.

They did not own the farms. I have seen other deeds that the Briens made and they were leases.

Ederney is in Magheraculmoney parish and Gargadis is in Kilskeery. Both parishes have Church of Ireland records starting from 1767, so you may be able to trace the families in those. I am not sure if either is on-line. Possibly not, in which case you may need to get someone to look them up for you in PRONI in Belfast.

Thanks again, Elwyn. Kilskeery parish is online, and I think Magheraculmoney also. The minister of the latter checked the marriage entry of Henry Brien and Mary Scott for me, because I could not read her place of residence on the microfilm years ago. He gave me the name Ederney. He told me he could not see any more of the name Scott in the registers so deduced that Mary had been married before, being in her thirties as well. That reminded me of the marriage articles of her son Francis Brien in which Henry Brien's wife, the above Mary, was referred to as Mary Crawford. I had ignored that, as Francis was narrying Mary Ann Crawford and it could have been an error on the part of the clerk.. It all fell into place for me then. James Crawford was buried in Ardess churchyard in 1788. Beside him were buried Mary & Henry's three children.The C of I minister gave me the burial record of Mary Brien herself, buried in grave F9 with her children.on 11/4/1837 aged 90. I am assuming then, that Mary was the daughter of James Crawford.  Mary Ann Crawford who married Francis Brien was the daughter of Francis Crawford a merchant of Trillick. It was an arranged marriage between Francis Brien & Mary Ann Crawford who I think were cousins. Francis Crawford married 28 Nov 1788 the same year that James Crawford died in March 1788.
