i am visting northern ireland from 5/8/15 until 24/8/15.

my family heritage is the West family from Maguires Bridge?? - my gg grandfather - john west migrated to australia around 1857

his grandson Walter, my grandfather, was a WW1 veteran and visited the area after the war, i have photos of him with,  i believe, some family members, and a group photo  with about 35 people in the photo, Walter is not in that photo.

I am hoping to connect with some family members and identify people in the photos.

Cheers Peter

    Peter,

I have a contact in the Maguiresbrige area. I'll see if she can give me any information. It may take a few days.

  • Peter,

I have spoken to my relative who lives in Maguiresbridge. Her recollection is that there were Wests who farmed in the townlands of Sallyhill & Tattykeeran, near Maguiresbridge. In the late 1960s they moved to Tyrenny, Brookeborough. They might still live there.

In addition there is a dairy farm in Littlemount, Maguiresbridge, occupied by a Robin West. His contact details are on Google:

    R West

    25 Littlemount Road, Littlemount,

    Maguiresbridge, County Fermanagh

    BT94 4RU

    028 8953 1244

The family church is likely Aghavea Church of Ireland. Photographs of the gravestones in the churchyard are on the Fermanagh Family History Society fb page.

  • Hi Peter

In my plans to visit Ireland next year I came across your post from a few years ago. My grandfather was Harry West who was a cousin of your grandfather Walter. He also enlisted in WWI and visited the family in Brookeborough. His war letters and parts of his diary had been handed down and few years ago I typed them out and had a number of copies printed. In his correspondence back home your grandfather is mentioned quite a number of times. Now I do not have any more hard copies, but there is a copy at the Cohuna historical society. I can see if I can send you an electronic copy if you would like one. My email address is alvinjohnson@bigpond.com

I would certainly like to hear of your time in Ireland and if you were able to find out anything interesting. My grandfather ended up marrying one of the West girls (Cicie) and they returned to Australia to live.

    Kind regards

    Alvin Johnson
