Location of Lisboy

Lisboy is a townland in the Civil Parish of Aghavea, Co. Fermanagh:

Records for the corresponding Roman Catholic Parish of Aghavea begin in 1862 for baptisms and 1866 for marriages. Church of Ireland records for the parish begin in 1815.

www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site. There are some marriage records for a John Savage listed on that site. I am limited however as to what information I can read there. It might be a good idea to have a look.

Griffiths Valuation for 1862 lists a Richard Savage in Lisboy, He was on plot 8a which was a farmhouse, outbuildings and 34 acres. Probably a relation of your John Savage. The tenant changes to Andrew Savage in 1877, probably indicating Richard had died. (There?s a death registered in Lisnaskea that fits for 1877, est year of birth 1800). Andrew purchased the freehold of the Lisboy farm in 1890 and it remained in his name till John Noble purchased it in 1919. The farm today is on the Ashbrooke Rd, a few miles east of Tempo.

Andrew Savage?s marriage to Charlotte Woods was registered in Clogher in 1880.

This family were Presbyterian. Does that tie in with your knowledge of Richard Savage?s denomination? The Lisboy family probably attended Tempo Presbyterian church, but you can never be certain as Presbyterians don?t use the parish system and so which church you attend is very much a matter of personal preference and not necessarily the nearest to where you live. If it was Tempo, their baptism records only start in 1874, and marriages in 1845. (Earlier records evidently lost).

Saw this probate file, but don?t know if it?s your Andrew Savage. Further research would be required to find out. The file is not on-line but is held in PRONI in Belfast.

Savage Andrew of Drumcor county Fermanagh farmer died 8 December 1940 Probate Londonderry 27 May to David Masterson and Samuel Beatty farmers. Effects ?1225 2s. 5d.

Thanks for your very prompt response Clare.  I'll follow up those leads.  I'd like to know what a townland is in Ireland - I'm assuming that it is a location rather than a village?  I'm assuming that they were a protestant family as John was buried in a Baptist and Congregational section of the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery in Australia.  It appears that he died within a few years  of emigrating.

Lisboy is a townland, one of approximately 64,000 in Ireland. Some are larger than others. To place these in context:

Ireland has four provinces: Ulster, Munster, Leinster and Connaught

Each of the provinces is divided into counties. So for example, the counties of Ulster are: Donegal, Derry, Antrim, Down, Armagh, Tyrone, Fermanagh, Monaghan and Cavan. Each county has a number of towns and villages within them.  

The smallest geographical unit is the townland. Groups of townlands brought together give you parishes.  The townlands can be seen on the Ordnance Survey Maps ? you can zoom in and look at the modern day street map or the older maps from the 1800s for the Republic of Ireland:

Hi Peter, If you're still interested, I am descended from the same line.  My ancestor, James Savage, was brother to your John Savage who emigrated to Australia.  All but one of this family emigrated to Murphy's Creek, Queensland.  Their parents were Richard and Ellenor Savage.  Only brother Andrew remaind in Lisboy.  There is a facebook page dedicated to this family in Australia - Murphys Creek Savage Family from Lisboy.  Please join.  Your name does not appear on the family tree held by the management.
