Hello. I am asking here if anyone knows anything more about Timothy Dolen. I explain further below:

I have read according to the history of Johnson County, Indiana that Timothy Dolen was born in Dublin, Ireland. I presume that meant the city at the time and not elsewhere in the region. I am sorry as this complicates the question, but I have not seen anywhere about what parish he was from exactly, or what denomination he was. There has been confusion over when he arrived in the what is now the USA. I think he was a farmer. 

Timothy Dolen was in Fayette County, Pennsylvania particularly Georges Township. He married an American woman Elizabeth Winans, a daughter of Creighton (Craton) Winans and Susannah Hopkins. Elizabeth was born circa 1778 in New Jersey. Elizabeth was a sister of the famous Methodist minister William Winans, who was known in Mississippi. 

Timothy is believed to have passed away in Clermont County, Ohio by 1817. His wife Elizabeth afterwards married Levi Bartholomew.

Timothy and Elizabeth's children were:

Obadiah Winans Dolen (named after his mother's brother). He was born on November 3rd 1808 in Ohio.

Susannah H. (middle name said to be Hopkins) Dolen. She was born on March 14th 1799. 

Silas Dolen who was born on May 14th 1797 (maybe named after a brother of Susannah Hopkins).

Elizabeth Dolen who was born on May 19th 1806 (I assume she was named after her mother).

It looks like most of the children of Timothy and Elizabeth were named for Elizabeth's side. I don't believe the children's names reflect much on Timothy's parents or give any clues as to their names. I have not seen any relatives of Timothy in America where he was.

Does anyone know what parish in Dublin that Timothy Dolen was from, or who his parents or siblings were?

  • I am not sure. He could have been. 

    Although, I don't think Timothy was born near 1786, because his first child was born in 1797. Timothy was probably born at latest 1779, maybe even 1777. 

    I read somewhere, I don't recall exactly, but sometimes when a Catholic man married a Protestant women, the children would be Protestant like their mother's family. So, he could have been Catholic, but his wife's family was Methodist, and their children were Methodists. I don't know if Timothy was a Methodist in America, but he could have been born Catholic and converted to the Methodist church.

    Thanks for looking into this. I'll see if I can confirm anything in the places in America where Timothy lived to be sure.

  • I have been researching this Timothy Dolen for three decades, and hope we can find some answers!   We are certain he was NOT Catholic.  He came to America and fought in the revolution.  I have several records.   My grandfather Dolen said he had learned from his g-grandfather that the spelling DolAn was used by Catholics, and the spelling DolEn was used by Protestants.  This may be family lore, or may be true, but he seemed certain.  After the Revolutionary War, Timothy and his wife, Elizabeth Winans Dolen (daughter of Creighton Winans), moved from SW Pennsylvania to SW Ohio, Clermont County, in the Ohio River Valley.  It was there that Timothy died.

    Please contact me and I will help you with whatever information I have.   I hope to be able to connect to Timothy's family in Ireland - have been searching for evidence for decades!
