I am trying to confirm details of my husbands 2 x great grandmother - Annie Flood - in Ireland; ahead of a planned visit in 2024! Details I have below:
Annie Flood was born about 1835 in Dublin, Ireland and died on the 3th February, 1914 in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Australia. (per Victorian Death Certificate, as follows:)
-
·
Annie Flood’s parents were William Flood (profession - Farmer) and Mary Leeson
-
·
Her sister, Eliza Flood, is listed as the informant on the death certificate.
-
·
She was 79 years of age – birth year calculated from this (1835)
-
·
She had been in Australia 54 years – arrival date calculated from this (1859-1860)
-
·
Annie was a widow; her husband Antonio Pinto Suares predeceasing her in 1878.
-
·
Annie and Antonio had 4 children – William Jose/Joseph Suares (1865-1923), Antonio Suares (1867-1886) Margrida Jane Suares (1869-1902) and John Henry Suares (1873-1879)
I have a shipping record for an Annie Flood arriving on the Commodore Perry in August 1859, at 23 years of age, a “nursemaid”, able to read and write, and religion R/C.
Annie and Antonio married at St Francis Catholic Church on the 1st June 1861.
After Antonio died, Annie worked for many years as a nurse running a private nursing home in Geelong, Victoria AUSTRALIA.
Eliza Flood (Annie’s sister) died in Melbourne on the 1st May 1917 and had never married. Her occupation is listed as a nurse; and her parents as William Flood (profession Farmer) and Mary Gleeson.
Eliza's Death certificate states 49 years in Victoria - I have a shipping record for an Eliza Flood, sponsored by Bridget Flood, arriving from Dublin into NSW in 1859. She is listed as being R/C, can read and write, a housemaid at the Royal College of Surgeons, Dublin - wondering if this could be my Eliza?
Any help greatly appreciated!
Jacqui Suares,
Australia

Jacqui,
I found two baptism records for Eliza Flood with a different mother from Bridget. The first is 27 Apr 1839 in St. Michan's Catholic Church & her parents are William Flood & Catherine Byrne. Then there is another record for her on 29 April 1839 in St. Paul's Catholic Church with the same parents. You can see both records transcribed on Ancestry. Attached is the St. Paul's record, but the St. Michan's file was too large to upload here. The St. Michan's record has the entry slashed out though...perhaps they wanted the baptism in St. Paul's.?? The second record at St. Paul's is also on the paid site Roots Ireland.
I did not find a record for Eliza with a mother named Gleeson. Perhaps Bridget and Eliza were half sisters.
Regards,
Carolyn
