I am searching for information on Jospeh Carson b. 1829. On mariage infomration it lists his father at Pat Crawford. He married Margaret Lauder b. 1828 ( daughter of Frank Lauder) in 1850 in Inishargy Parish.
I am not sure why Jospeh and his father do not share the same last name. I am at a stand still. Any information on the mentioned family lines would be appreciated. Thank you in adavance.

There are two common explanations as to why a father and son do not share the same surname. One is that the child was illegitimate and took the mother?s surname. The other is that the mother was widowed and remarried and the children by the first marriage took her new surname.
The 1850 civil marriage certificate (Newtownards 1850 Vol 9, page 109) should give you a bit more information with which to search back. Eg townlands, fathers occupations etc. Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church (which should be on the certificate, unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

Erica, I know this message is from a few years ago, but I would love to get in contact with you. My husband is a cousin of yours! He is also descended from Joseph Carson and Margaret Lauder. I really hope you see this somehow. We are about to take a trip to Ireland and I'd be very interested in any information anyone has found on the Carson/Lauder families.
