Hello ,My Grandfather was George Stevenson .He is on the Newtownards  War Memorial.Son of Samuel Stevenson, and Roseanne McMullin.

Samuel's Father was also Samuel ,Blacksmith.Roseanne's Father was John . They were Church of Ireland ,so no records before Civil Registration.I have about 32 marriages taking place of Stevensons' in St.Marks.I do know the Stevenson name ,with that spelling came over from North Ayrshire  with James Hamilton during the Ulster Plantation.Unfortunately i can't travel any more.Would love to have seen my ancesters home, and walk in their footsteps.

  • Nothing more.Would like to find the issue of Samuel Stevenson ,blacksmith .I have only my direct line. Was on Emerald Ancesters site, but to dear for me to get all these marriages.I have most of Samuel and Rosanne's issue and who they married, just had to find those with an Ellen Jane Stevenson ,or similar as a daughter.Would love to find out where the name Ellen Jane  first sits in the Family .Have found about 5 so far counting myself. One married Hugh Menage and emigrated to New York, can remember her visiting my Father in the 1950's  Have an uncle Robert( Boyle ?) Stevenson ,son of George Stevenson from my first post, which makes me think there is a connection with the Robert Boyle that marries  Elizabeth Stevenson

  • Hi Ellie

Do you know when George was born? I can find civil birth records for a Samuel George, Elizabeth and Mary Ann born to a father Samuel and mother Mary Ann Mullan. What are the chances that Rose Ann and Mary Ann are the same people I wonder?

Samuel and Roseann married in the parish of Ards on 24-Oct-1866 as you probably know. I haven't been able to find a record of any children born to a mother named Roseann.

I don't see any Stevenson blacksmith listed on the 1901 Census:

Earliest COI records for Newtownards have been destroyed but if you could find Samueal on the Griffith's Valuation (he may have leased some land) you could use the Valuation records to trace the family forward:

Griffith's Valuation is here for free: http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

    Valuation Records at PRONI: http://apps.proni.gov.uk/Val12B/Search.aspx

  • Ellie,

I had a look on the Ulster Historical Foundation site. You can search there with the father’s forename. Between 1849 and 1885 there are about 15 or more people named Stevenson who got married in Co Down and whose father was named Samuel. Obviously they won’t all be this family but presumably some are. No easy way of tracing them without looking at the certificates.

  • Ellie,

For records of Non RC marriages from 1st April 1845 onwards, you have some choices. The original certificates were copied. One set is held by GRONI (General Register Office of Northern Ireland). That set is an original (ie with the couples signatures). A duplicate set was created, by Register Office clerks, and that is held by GRO Roscommon. It does not have the bride, groom and witnesses own signatures but should othereise replicate the GRONI certificate. You can view the GRONI set on-line. The Roscommon records are not viewable on-line. Both sets should contain exactly the same information but due to human error with indexing etc, sometimes a record will appear in one set but not the other. However the GRONI set is cheaper and more immediately accessible. And for records after 1922 (partition of Ireland) GRONI has the only set of records for NI.

You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

You can order a photocopy of the certificate from GRO Roscommon for €4 (euros).  http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

You have to download and print off the form. Then either post or fax it back to them. You can’t e-mail it to them. However if you want them to e-mail the cert to back to you, they will do that, so tick the relevant box.

Put the reference details on the form (anywhere). Don’t worry about leaving some boxes blank. As long as GRO have the location, name(s), year, quarter (where there is one), volume and page number they should find it.

In addition, rootsireland and the UHF (subscription/pay to view sites) also have the same records but in transcript form, so you don’t see the original documents. And transcripts obviously carry risks of errors.

Roscommon doesn’t have any church records. Church of Ireland records are held in various locations. Some are still held by the church, some by the RCB library in Dublin, PRONI in Belfast has copies of some and many are lost. Rootsireland has some transcripts on their site. For Newtownards, Church of Ireland, all records pre 1884 were destroyed in the 1922 fire in the Four Courts. Ironically they had been sent there for safe keeping. So marriages post 1845 survive because the civil Registrar kept a duplicate copy from that date onwards, but all the earlier records are lost.
