I am searching for information on the family of Ann Jane Tooman, born c.1844 Newry, County Down.
I know that Ann Jane had a brother named John born c.1836, as they both travelled to New Zealand.
Ann Jane, her brother, his wife and their younger children left Ireland for Cape Town, South Africa on board the JALAWAR arriving December 1859.

Hi,
Thanks for your message. I hope that someone with information contacts you.
In the meantime, have you tried looking at church records? Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. For Newry parish, follow this link:
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
You can see what church records are available online at Roots Ireland at the following link, please note that you have to pay to view these records:

www.familysearch.org also have some records available.
There was only one Tooman recorded in Griffith?s Valuation in CO. Down:
The above record is from 1864, so after Anne and John left, but perhaps there may be some connection between them and William in Garvaghey.
Some other websites that you may find useful in your research are:
