Newry, County Down. Dairy Farmer(?). Married Eleanor Farrell. She was born in Newry. He was born other place in Ireland (I have Ballymasonmack, but can’t find that it exists).

  • So sorry Elwyn!  I just realized how long it has been since I've been on this site!  If you're still there, the dates are

James Jones  b. 28 Aug 1838 Ballymasonmack(?), Down

                           d. 18 Sep 1907 Belfast (I know where he's buried)

Married Eleanor Farrell (b. 11 July 1839 Newry, Down) 31 Dec 1862, Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Ireland? prob.

                                                                                                                                                                                    Scotland

    Thanks!

  • The Coatbridge marriage certificate should give you James & Eleanor’s parents, names and their occupation. It should also tell you whether they were alive or dead on 31.12.1862. (GROS 1863 652/2 7).

I checked for a will for James but he didn’t leave one, or at least not one that required probate.

Is this the family in 1901:

Can’t help with Ballymasonmack. I can’t see anywhere that’s spelled anything like that anywhere in Co. Down. (The census indicates he was born in that county).  Assuming Eleanor was Church of Ireland and came from Newry then their baptism records start in 1804. They are not on-line anywhere so far as I am aware but there is a copy in PRONI in Belfast. If she was RC, then their records start in 1818 and they are on-line free on the National Library site:

    https://www.nli.ie/en/family-history-introduction.aspx

If she was some other denomination, let me know and I’ll tell you what records exist.

Death registration started in Ireland in 1864. If any of the parents were alive in 1862, let me know together with their occupations, and I’ll look for possible deaths.
