Bernard Hughes

I had a look in the current phone book for the Newry area (postcode BT35). There are 77 people named Hughes listed. It’s a very common name. (There were 795 people of the name in the county in the 1901 census). To try and narrow the search, do you have any information on where in Newry your family lived?

Thank you for your response. I am sorry I have no other information about where they lived in Newry. Bernard Hughes had two sons and a daughter born and probably baptized in Newry, Patrick, Bernard and Mary Anne. Patrick's granddaughter, Lois M. Hughes (1915-1980) visited Dublin in 1937 and stayed with her cousin Lady Jane O'Connell of Dublin. Should I look for a connection there?

Probably Lady Jane is your best option. She shouldn't be too difficult to trace if she had a title. She should be listed in Debretts or Burke's peerage. Otherwise you would probably need to rely on DNA testing.

Hello Daniel, I am so excited to receive your message. Also my great great grandparents, Bernard Hughes and Ann Fegan's son Patrick married second wife, Margaret Sheridan in Toronto CN. Their daughter Lois or Louise Margaret Hughes married Charles W. Miller in 1910, moved to Brooklyn, NY, and my father Charles W Miller Jr. was born in 1911. I grew up on Long Island NY, but now live on n Maryland. Can you tell me about your ancestors? Please forgive my tardiness in replying. Life's a great adventure. My great-grandfather Bernard Hughes married Anne Sheridan(Margerite's sister) from Rochester New York and his son Vincent James Hughes married Evelyn Falconbridge. They had 2 sons Glenholme and Phillipe. Glenholme married Beryl Mullin and theyhad 4 children Daniel Vincent (died as an infant during WW2 in England where my parents were serving with the Canadian army) Evelyn, Daniel Glenholme and Tina.

I am interested in Bernard Hughes as I appear to have DNA matches to a Bernard Hughes and I am interested that they became merchants in Canada.

My GGx3 Thomas Hughes was a merchant in Newry - born in 1792 by 1852 he had a large premises on Merchants Quay. He was a grocery and spriit dealer.

Peter O' Reilly O’Connell born Cavan circa 1860 was the son of Patrick O’Connell of
Maudabawn.  He attended St Patrick’s College and graduated MD and Master of
Surgery from the Royal University of Ireland.  He also studied on the continent
and was a Licentiate in Midwifery of The Coombe Hospital.  He was a member of
St Vincent de Paul and a founder of The Mater Infirmary in Belfast.

He married Jane Hughes at the Roman Catholic Church of St Pauls of the Cross,
Mount Argus on 27 Apr 1907, the same year as he was High Sheriff of Belfast, where
he served on the corporation for a number of years.  His wife was Jane Hughes,
daughter of Edward Hughes and granddaughter to Barney Hughes and his second
wife Jane.  Her grandfather was the entrepreneur founder of Bernard Hughes Ltd,
Millers and Bakers who automated the bread making industry in Ireland and was the
famous maker of the Belfast bap.  After his marriage he gave up private practice and
devoted himself to public and philanthropic works.  The couple lived between
Derryvolgie Avenue in Belfast and Oatlands in Stillorgan.  He was conferred with a
knighthood in 1908.  

In 1927, Sir Peter left Ireland for a holiday in France on arrival in Marseilles, he
developed a serious illness and died a month later.  His body was brought home and
after the funeral in Holy Cross, he was laid to rest at Milltown cemetery, Belfast.  Lady
Jane had to contend with numerous court orders after her husband's death.  She
continued as a member of the council for the Women's Health Association and died in
1949.  She left 23K in personal estate in Northern Ireland & England."
