Thank you. Very interesting match. Interesting that Jane might have been previously married. We knew her strictly by Shields.
Bears more digging :)

Hi Sheila I've been researching your William McMullan/McMullen and Jane Shields. I have discussed this couple with some other's who are apparently also related to them. One person felt they emigrated to Canada about the same period of time as my McMullan family. My GG Grandparent's were John McMullan and Margaret Orr, and they married at the Church of Ireland Downpatrick Cathedral May 2, 1844 in County Down. I realize your William and Jane eventually were at Renfrew Co, Ontario. It appears they were at Fitzroy, Carleton Co, Ontario on the 1851/52 Ontario census. That census shows the name as "Mullen" (sometimes the Mc is dropped on records I've seen). William showed as Roman Catholic on that census and the other family as Church of Scotland. Some have thought my John might have been Roman Catholic, but the only knowledge I have is that he married Church of Ireland. My Great Grandfather, William John McMullen/McMillan was baptized at Montreal in January 1852. At the time of baptism, my John McMullen was noted as not present, and was said working as a shoemaker at Bytown, Canada West (Ontario). Bytown was in Carleton County, and in 1855 became Ottawa. I saw one John McMullen at Nepean, Carleton Co on the 1851/52 census, but he showed as single and a laborer, so not sure if he was my John or not? I don't know if your William and my John could have been related or not? I've been hoping to find a male McMullen from your William's descendants who may have had a male lineage Y-DNA test, or either a male or female of the lineage who have had an autosomal DNA test. I have had those DNA tests and could compare my results. Thanks!! Tom McMillan (State of Washington, USA)
