Hello,

I'm wondering if someone can help me. I know of one, and perhaps two grave sites that I would love to get photos of and I'm just wondering if anyone knows how I could do that? I have the text as trascribed in the early 1980s but a photo would be special. I'm interested in the McKee-Kennedy family plot in the Old Killaney graveyard where James and Agnes McKee and many of their children are buried, as well as their daughter Jeannie McKee Kennedy and her husband Michael Kennedy. Their son Frederick is also buried there. I believe that Michael and Jeannie's other children Gerald, Irene and Miram Kennedy might also be buried there but it might be a separate grave. It was described as "the graveyard that surrounds the church" so I'm not sure if that is the same location or not. From what I understand, the church associated with the Old Killaney graveyard is in ruins, so I think that Gerald, Miriam and Irene must be near the newer church.

Is there a service that can do this for me? We would dearly love pictures if possible.

  • Hi Rootslb

I'm a regular visitor to that part of Ireland and will probably be up there around the end of September, so if no-one else comes back to you before then I'll be happy to get some photos for you.  Can you provide any other details such are year of death etc. or is all the first post all the information you have?

    All the best

  • That is so kind of you! My mom is really trying to finish up her family books before she heads in for surgery in late September, so hopefully someone local will respond, but I so appreciate the offer.

Here is the link to a transcription and location for the site in the Old Killaney Graveyard (it is the one at the bottom of the page):

I don't actually know if the other children of Michael and Jeannie (Gerald, Irene & Miriam) are in the same graveyard or not. It was described as "the one that surrounds Killaney Church", which is no longer in use, but I don't think it is in ruins or anything. This site would have Gerald, Irene and Miriam Kennedy. They may have simply been added to the one with their parents and brother, or it might be a new site. The transcription in the link above was done before these three people died.

    Gerald Moore Kennedy b. 30th April, 1902, d. 7th May, 1985

    Irene Agnes Dunwoody Kennedy b. 24th April, 1901, d. 12th November, 1992

    Miriam Isabella Kennedy b. 25th September, 1911, d. some time after 2000 - I don't have her exact date.

    Thanks again for the offer!

    Lisa

  • Linda,

Our "have to be finished" date has been pushed out. I'd be extremely grateful if you would take photos for me. I don't know how I could return the favor but if there is anything you need from the NW United States let me know :)

  • Hi Lisa

I made it to Killaney today and luckily I brought my father-in-law with me as it turned into a search for a field with some blackberry picking along the way!  My in-laws are locals so I would have literally been lost if he hadn't come with me.

We found St Andrews and it's graveyard, which is listed as Killaney Graveyard but is actually the new church and graveyard and not the one with your McKee Kennedy plot.  A very helpful caretaker called Gary showed us around and when we realised it was the Old Graveyard we needed he gave us directions of how to get there, which ended with "walk across the field to the circle of trees and there it is".  It was a lovely adventure as you will see.

I have attached 2 of the photos below but the size limit means I cannot attach any more so I will try to email the rest to you.  I also made a couple of videos which I will try to email you.   As you'll see I'm no Speilberg, but I hope you enjoy them.

There were a few other headstones in the Old Killaney Cemetery with the McKee name on them so I took photos of them for you in case they are linked to your family.  These are also on the email.

I'm afraid I couldn't find the Kennedy's that died in the 80's, 90's and noughties.  They wouldn't have been buried in the Old graveyard as it appears to have been closed many years ago.  You may need to look for obituaries to find out where they are buried.  I will search the papers I have access to and let you know if I find anything.

I hope you and your mum enjoy the photos and please let me know if you get the email.

    Regards

    Linda

  • Linda,

I do have obituaries for two of the three that died more recently. I will email them both as they are too big to attach. Only one gives a location and it says "Kilaney Presbyterian Church." I emailed Rev. Orr who signed their death certificates and he very kindly gave me the following about where they are buried:

"The little Presbyterian Church at Killaney is no longer used for worship. However, when the congregation of Killaney amalgamated with 1st. and 2nd. Boardmills congregations, the Killaney building was retained by the new amalgamated congregation. The graveyard lies around this church building, and that is where the family lies buried."

I wish I knew more about the area and could be more helpful. I think this is a photo of the church where they are buried:

  • Dear Lisa,

My name is Maurice McKee, I have been trying to locate the gravestone of my Great Granda George McKee who was buried in the same old Killaney graveyard. I actually saw the poorly marke grave about 40 years ago, but the marking has disappeared. Have you ever been able to locate a record of burials in that graveyard?

  • Mo,

I have the full transcript of this particular gravesite in Old Killaney and I have a lovely photo but it doesn't have a George McKee on it. I also checked on the Ulster Historical Society for a George McKee in this graveyard. They transcribed all the headstones back in the 1980s, but they didn't have anything either. The stones for McKee that they have from there are for James McKee (the one I wanted), Mary Jane McKee from 1987, David and Isabella McKee and their son Hugh started in 1830, and James McKee of Temple from about 1900. If you want full transcripts let me know.
