My ancestor Peter Doran was born c1821 in County Down. In 1847 he married Barbara Orr of Catrine in Sorn parish church, Ayrshire, Scotland. Their eldest son Arthur was baptised in 1851 in Glassdrummon R.C. church, Kilkeel (which is why im assuming that Kilkeel was Peter's home parish). Shortly after they settled in Liverpool where all their other children were born.

Anyone else also researching them?

  • Hi there,

Unfortunately the Kilkeel church records only start from 1839 (for Roman Catholic records). Do you know what religion he was?

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) for more information. You have some idea of where he might be from, so it could be worth checking.

You could also check the death notices of local newspapers (Liverpool) to see if there was any more information provided.

Make sure to talk to as many elderly relatives as possible, as often times one family member might know something the rest of the family are unaware of.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,

  • I have very little informatuon on my grandfather, Arthur Doran, from Kilkeel, County Down.  Unfortunately all elderly relatives are gone.  Arthur was born in June of 1885.  He left for America in approximately 1905?  Entered US through Boston and went to the Klondike gold rush.  He had a brother, Gene who also came to America.  They both settled in Seattle, Washington.  He was Catholic.
