I am researching my GGG grandfather Edward Rogers (1811-1869). His son, Patrick (my GG grandfather) emigrated to the Isle of Man some time before 1864/65.

Edward was a farmer in Moneydorragh More townland, Kilkeel parish and appears in Griffiths Valuation for 1863. However, there are no fewer than 4, possibly 5 Edward Rogers in just that one townland. The GV valuers gave each an agnomen and I think I have identified my Edward as Edward Rogers (Big). I have done some research trying to match Rogers families from GV 1863 and subsequent Revision Books to the 1901 and 1911 Census of Ireland. I can share this information.

Does anyone else connect to this Edward or is anyone able to provide information that might help confirm that I have the right Edward?

Thanks.

    Patrick,

Looking at the records for Moneydorragh More I see Edward Rogers (Big) on plot 17 there. The revision records show that remaining in his name till 1871 when it changes to Ellen Rogers. Does that fit with your understanding of the family?

There is a death registered in Kilkeel for an Edward Rodgers on 28.11.1869 aged 58. That is not available to view on-line free yet, so if you want to see it, you’ll need to pay to view on the GRONI site (£2.50).

There’s a death for an Ellen Rogers in the townland in 1897. Don’t know if it’s the same lady. She was a spinster.

There are several other possibles on the irishgenealogysite but there are quality issues and you can’t view them.

  • Thanks Elwyn.

Yes, this fits in with my understanding. I already have the death record you mention for Edward on 28.11.1869. He is listed as a farmer in Moneydorragh and the informant is John Rogers.

I had also found what I think is the death record for Edward’s wife Ellen in December 1886:

Here too the informant is John Rogers, so I am assuming that John is the son of Edward and Ellen. The lease for plot 17 changes from Ellen Rogers to John Rogers (Ned) in 1887 which fits in well with Ellen’s death record. I assume that the agnomen Ned means John is the son of Ned, ie Edward, Rogers.

I can’t see John Rogers (Ned) in either the 1901 or 1911 censuses. There are a number of John Rogers/Rodgers but none that fit the age, etc profile. I was keen to find this John Rogers to try to establish a link with Rogers/Rodgers still living in the Moneydorragh/Kilkeel area.

    Patrick,

I have a suggestion as to which property is plot 17 in the 1901 census. If you look at the Revision records you may note that William Newall was Ned’s neighbour in the townland (plot 18). Now if you go to the 1901 census you’ll find Margaret Rogers on enumerators house no 61, and next door on house 62 was William Newall. Looks to me as though they must be the 2 properties.

John Rogers in the 1901 census appears to have married Ellen Maginn in 1893. Daughter Catherine born 26.1.1897. Father’s occupation was farmer and stone cutter.

John’s father was another John, so could well be Ned.

I think the reason Ned isn’t in the 1901 census is that he was dead. His widow Margaret was still there though.

I have attached a background article on Griffiths which discusses Agnomens and what you may be able to learn from them.

  • Elwyn,

I think this family of Margaret Rogers in House 61 links to Plot 55. In GV the lessee for Plot 55 in 1901 is given as John Rogers Jr.

    https://apps.proni.gov.uk/Val12B/ViewImage.aspx

I think this is the likely marriage for Margaret and John:

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_re…

John’s father is given as Daniel Rodgers. In Griffiths 1963 plot 55 is leased by Daniel Rogers.

Also, I believe my John Rogers (Ned) is still alive in 1901. In fact, he is still leasing 3 plots (17, 21 and 63b) in the GV Revision Book for 1905 - 1915).

  • Patrick,

You could well right. Not sure I can add anything to your information. Possibly someone with more knowledge of the families may see this and help.

  • I understand the frustration as I have also seen all these Rogers/Rodgers. My Rogers line is all Grange and Lurganconary Kilkeel. My gg father is Richard Rogers/Rodgers his father Richard and his father Richard. Doesnt help they all name their children the same names. Often wonder if some of theRogers are related to my family in your area. Very frustrating.
