William Gribben was a shoemaker in Newcastle Co Down. He married mary Walsh. Their son Peter was born about 1842 in Newcastle. He married Ellen McNally in 1871 in the Catholic Chapel at Bryansford. Peter was a carpenter/ joiner journeyman and they later emigrated first to Whitehaven in Cumbria and then to Lancashire. Descendents of Peter and Ellen now live in England, Canada and Australia. Twice we have had family get togethers at my house in Yorkshire. Alison

I looked at the 1863 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Kilcoo civil parish. There was no William Gribben listed although there were five other Gribbens listed. William may have been deceased or he was not leasing land. There was a Patrick McNally on King Street in Newcastle.

I assume you have the church recor of the 1871 marriage. Below is the civil marriage index record. You can get a copy of the record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record would show the names of the fathers of the bride and groom and where the bride and groom were living in 1871. See this link to print out a form and write to the GRO. You need to also provide the registration district and volume and page number.

  • Thank you Roger. Your contributions help me to re-evaluate the evidence I have.

I don't have the marriage certificate for Peter Gribben and Ellen McNally but I got all the details from the parish records at the PRONI in Belfast.

I have found a possible William Gribben renting land in Carnacavill and another (or same William) renting land in Ballyginny. Both in Maghera and both close to Brynasford which was their parish church. Peter was botn in Carnacavill according to his son's baptism.

William was a carpenter according to Peter's marriage certificate and I believe he may have worked (for a time) at Tollymore Park near Bryansford where there was a sawmill. One daughter was born at Tollymore.

In 1876, in the County Down Land Deeds, a William rented 4 acres in Clough, Maghera. William's son John was born near Maghera and his grandson Patrick William was born in Clough. I feel the evidence suggests the William in the Griffiths and in the Land Deeds is probably 'my' William.

I agree that Patrick McNally in King's St, Newcastle is probably 'my' Patrick. I also have a Patrick (same?) renting land in Shore Road. Patrick was a shoe maker and I have records of him from Newcastle directories in 1870 and 1877.

    Kind regards

    Alison
