  • Hello,

What a nice surprise to come across your posting.... Cassie and Robert Speers were my husband Roy's grandparents. I look forward to exploring the family connections.

I have attached a photo of the Irish Immigrant Speers Children taken in 1920 when they moved to the wilds of  North Vancouver, British Columbia

  • We are also trying to track down the Roy family in Belfast/Antrim area.

Hugh Roy is the earliest name we have.

B.1834 in Belfast, Antrim Believed to have died in Belfast.

    His Son, Hugh Roy:

    B.Abt. 1854 in Belfast D. 30 Jul 1901 in Sydney

Migrated to Sydney, Australia before his wife (Ellen Jane Roy nee Greer) and son Robert James Roy migrated in 1876/77 on the "St Lawrence".

There are now further 3 generations of Roy's in Australia. Any other information you might have would be appreciated!

    Kind regards,

    Phil

  • Hi Phil,

I've a funny feeling I might be from part of that Roy dynasty now based in Sydney. My father Paul Roy, was the son of Albert Roy, whose father was Hugh Roy born in N. Ireland. Hugh moved to Sydney where  Albert then grew up, and our side of the family has remained, although a fair few of my siblings lived in Dublin for quite a while, which is where I still live at the moment.

I'll dig up Hugh's birth cert which was last seen when my father Paul got his Irish citizenship 10 years ago!

Please don't hesitate to email me, as it has been a long while since I should have tried to follow these connections. Ironically most of the immediate family will be in Ireland for the next few weeks for my wedding.

    Kind Regards,

    Andy Roy

  • Hello Andy,

I would be interested in any information you could pass along.

I since have found that David ROY was born at Castlereagh, Down, and

his father's name was Robert. I believe that he died 2 Mar 1934 in Belfast.

Actually, I am not sure if I have a connection with the David Roy Family

but there is "method in my madness".

Following is information for the family from which I descend. Because David Roy lived a few streets away from my lot while living in Pittsburgh, I am hoping that I can connect through him.

    ***ROY Family

-was from Lawrenceville neighborhood of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Immigrated from Down,Ireland in 1847/1848.

    -My 2nd Great-Grandparents:

Robert ROY (born Ireland about 1803), wife, Margaret A. ? (born Ireland about 1810)

Both Robert's and Margaret's death records state that they were born in County Down, Ireland.

Robert's parents were listed as John and Margaret Roy.

Robert was a roller in the steel mills.

Robert's first wife, Sarah Walker, was the mother of his two Irish-born children. She most likely died in Ireland.

    children:

    with Sarah Walker

-Sarah A. (born Ireland 1840) married William Hill in the USA.

Her two daughters died at ages 4 and 5. Sarah gave birth to a son who died at birth.

Sarah also died two months later, of pregnancy complications (and, I would guess, of a broken heart.)

-Robert John (born Ireland-July 11,1844) married Josephine(Von)Moke in the USA.

    with Margaret A.?

-Elizabeth (born 1847 at sea or possibly in Liverpool) (MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER)

    m. John E. Tencate, born in Lyme Regis, Dorset, England.

He immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1852 and settled in the Philadelphia area.

He met Elizabeth in Pittsburgh while working in the steel mills.

children: Frank A., Harry (MY GRANDFATHER), Elmore,

    Sarah(Sadie)

-William (born 1852 PA) (married Mary McCowan (McGowan) ***

    Hope we can connect.

Best wishes for your wedding! Enjoy your family!

  • Hello fellow ROY researchers,

To recap the research I am doing on my husband's paternal line, David Roy was born about 1853 County Down and died 08 July 1931 Belfast.   He was married 31 Dec 1875 at Belfast to Elizabeth Margaret Nixon born about 1855 and died Dec 1893 Pittsburgh, USA.

David Roy's father was Robert Roy born about 1833 County Down and died 1876 Downpatrick, Down.

I am attaching a 4 generation photo of David Roy, I believe his mother, his son Robert Roy and grandson Robert Roy, taken approx 1910.

Also a photo take in Pittsburgh before David Roy and children returned to Ireland after the death of Elizabeth Nixon Roy.

I have confirmed   connections with two distant cousins on my paternal side through photographs which are over 100 years old, one cousin in Scotland and one in Australia... so take a look at these photos, the faces may be ones you have in an old shoebox.

For those that are unaware, the GRO of Northern Ireland has recently permitted access to search and  view BMD certificates for a small fee.

    Happy Hunting,

  • Hi, it was good to find this post. Thomas Roy was my Great Grandfather, my Dads maternal side. My Grandmother was Mary Roy who married John Smyth, therefore David is my Great, Great Grandfather and Robert my Great, Great, Great Grandfather! I would be very interested in any additional information you may have and perhaps photos if you have them.

    Many thanks,

    John

  • Hi, I have just discovered this site so my reply to all these posts is arriving a bit late,

David Roy, born in Castlereagh in Belfast, was my great great grandfather, and  Robert Roy born in 1877 was my great grandfather.Robert Roy married Sarah Andrews, who was born in 1882,originally from Ballina in County Mayo, and by the time of the 1911 Irish Census they were living in 37 Oak;and Avenue in Belfast. They had 3 children, Robert born in 1902, Violet born in 1905 and Frederick, the youngest.Robert Roy was working as an Engine Fitter, most likely in the shipyard in Harland and Wolff. Robert Roy, my grandfather married Lily Hurst in 1936 and my mother Adrienne Roy was born in 1937. Sadly Robert died in 1939 and my grandmother Lily married Robert Roy's first cousin, James Boyd Andrews.

Hope someone from the family is still reading these posts. I would very much like to see the photo of the Roy family as there are no photos of my grandfather , Robert Roy.
