Edward Perry Brooke Armstrong b 1856 Legananny,  Down, Ireland is named after a Vicar.  There are several Edward Perry Brookes in the family\, so I'm wondering which parish Edward Perry Brooke was the Vicar of.  Was he ever the Vicar in Drumgooland?  Does anyone know?

He was the Rector of Magheralin in Co. Down. I gave you a couple of links but you can probably find other references.

  • Yes, thank-you.  Is Magheralin a civil parish or and ecclesiastical parish?  I'm tryiing to figure out what denomination the Martins and Armstrongs using this name were. I'm quite certain they were Church of Ireland congregation, but as of yet, I've only found them in Drumgooland Parish, and I belive Ballyward was the ecclesiastical parish, or so I thought.  I'm trying to figure out how they are connected.  Did the Rector of Magheralin serve Drumgooland, or would my ancestors be from the Magheralin area.  I was pretty certain they were living in Legananny, near Castelwellan at the time.  Any way, if you know, I'd appreciate your help.

Magheralin is a civil and ecclesiatical parish. Magheralin is located in northwest Co. Down on the Armagh border. Drumgooland is in more central Co. Down and I don't see how the Rector of Magheralin would also have jurisdiction over Drumgooland.

  • He was the Rector of Drumgooland also.  Is there any way of finding out when he was the Rector of Magheralin, and when he was the Rector in Drumgooland?  The books don't have dates. The Rectory was in Ballyward, so my information is correct.  It appears in 1856, Edward Perry Brooke was the Rector in Drumgooland.  Since this is the first Edward Perry Brooke Armstrong, I'm certain he was their Rector at the time.  No leads here.  Thanks for your time.

  • Becky,

For career details of Church of England/Ireland Ministers between 1835 & 1967, you need to contact Lambeth Palace. See:  http://www.crockford.org.uk/standard.asp?id=1243

Alternatively some libraries have paper copies of Crockford's Clerical Directory from the 1800s and 1900s, as does PRONI. They should also contain the information you are after.
