Per an immigration record for a visit from Ontario, Canada to the US, probably filled out by a son...it states she is from "Touegas, Co Down, Ireland"

I have searched...any ideas of what this really means?

she came to Canada in 1856 - married James McConnell - both Presbyterians in Canada. No info on his homeland in Ireland.

Thanks in advance...

  • Laurie,

Most people gave their townland as their address. These were often mistranscribed making them tricky to identify. You can see all the townlands in Co Down using this site:

Unfortunately I can?t see any that are anything like Touegas. Bit baffled. Elizabeth Morrison is a very common name in Co Down (a large proportion of whom were descendants of Scottish settlers) so, without the townland, it?s a bit like searching for John Smith. There?s a couple of dozen Elizabeth Morrisons in Co Down on this site, but without a clearer idea of where yours originated it?ll be difficult to identify a firm link:

  • I did browse the listings of Parish and Townland names...but could not even make a guess. Even looked at RC though I doubted it would apply. Will try to attach an image of it here - you might have a better idea then I...

  • It might be helpful to view the original record rather than the transcription, as the handwriting may give additional clues. You might be able to find it at http://heritage.canadiana.ca/

    best of luck!

  • I have looked at it but I am none the wiser. I am pretty sure there?s nowhere of that spelling in Co Down. Can?t think of anywhere that sounds remotely like it either. Sorry.
