I have a hit a wall researching information about my family.  I have researched to these ancestors, William Mebane born approximately 1690 in County, Down and Mary Hiereann born approximately 1698. They were married in 1715.  They had many children but only 2 are recorded to have been born in County  Down. Alexander I Mebane, born November 26, 1716 and another son John Mebane in 1718, no specific date found on him. Emigrated somewhere between 1718 and 1726 to Pennsylvania. They had many more children in the states.  However, I am focused specifically on these two grand parents many generations removed.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Blessings,

  • Hi -

    Thank you for your message.

You have been quite lucky so far in your search - as the unfortunate reality of finding documentation pertaining to births/baptisms/marriages/deaths in Ireland prior to 1800 ? particularly in rural areas ? is that they often simply do not exist.

Some sites that might be of some assistance to you are:

British parliamentary papers on Ireland can be found at: http://eppi.dippam.ac.uk/documents/9824/eppi_pages/215093

The National Archives UK ? genealogy search: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/

The Public Records Office of Northern Ireland http://www.proni.gov.uk/index/family_history.htm

Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
