Looking for John Fagan, Born 1797 in County Down, Died in 1871 in Belfast, Antrim Ireland. He lived in these areas we believe, the Civil Parish Seapatrick, Townland Ballyvally, Poor Law Union Banbridge, Barony Iveagh, Upper Half. Any info would be appreciated. I believe also that John married a woman Jane Bell Born in 1796. We would also like any info on John's parents. Some of our Fagan clan lived in Meath and Dublin so some of them may be related to our John.

Also for reference is his Son John Fagan Born in 1816 in County Down,. he married Sarah Stewart Born in 1822 of Carlisle England and her mother was Elizabeth Durmackin who also was born in County Down, Ireland. John Jr. and Elizabeth Durmackin both moved to Carlisle, North Cumberland, England but I don't think they knew each other.

The attache picture is of John Fagan who was born in 1816 in County Down, Ireland.

  • Mitchell:

Can you clarify how Elizabeth Dunmore is related to the older John Fagan. When did the older John move to England?

  • Elizabeth Durmiken is the Mother In Law of our first John Fagan who was born in County Down (1816), Elizabeth Durmiken was also born in County Down in 1794. Her daughter Sarah Stewart was born in Carlisle England in 1822. John and Sarah married around 1844 in Gretna Green, Dumfriew-shire, Scotoland.. This information came from the 1851 Census of Cumberland England. Both John 1st and Sarah along with Sarah's Mother Elizabeth Durmaken stayed in England. Their Son John Joseph Fagan the 2nd born in 1847 and his wife Mabel Armstrong born in 1863 moved to the USA in 1882 along with their 3 very young children: John Henry Fagan, Mary Elizabeth, and Joseph George.

Any more info on my relative would be very grateful.

  • Mitchell:

Thanks. You didn't mention Sarah in the initial message which is why I was not sure about John's relationship with Elizabeth.

I checked Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and found two baptismal records for a John Fagan. The first was in 1822 and the second was 1826. Not sure if either pertains to your ancestor and without his parents names, it would be difficult to confirm.

Roots is a pay site to view a transcription of a church record.

I also checked the Tithe listings for Co. Down but did not locate any Fagan entries.

  • Hi Roger, an update on my family. Elizabeth Durmiken was born in County Down Ireland in 1794. She died in 1862 in Carlisle, Cumberland, England. She is the mother of Sarah Stewart Born in 1822 in Carlisle also. She married John Fagan 2nd who was born in 1816 in Couty Down, Ireland. I believe he lived with his father John Fagan 1st born in 1797 County Down, and lived at Cival Parish of Seapatrick, Ballyvally/Banbridge/Checker Hill. This comes from Griffith's Valuation 1847-1864 Transcription.

I would like more information on my Grt Grt Grt Greatfather John Fagan, his info is above of where he lived in County, Down. Born in 1797. He might also have married a woman name Jane Bell.

Any help would be grateful. Sincerely Mitchell Fagan

  • Hello Mitchell!

This is the closest baptismal record for a John Fagan but it was in the Dromore C of I church. Did not find a John Fagan marriage to a woman with the surname Bell.

Did not know the religious denominmation.

C of I records for Seapatrick start in 1802 and Presbyterian records start in 1756 but they are not on Roots Ireland.

  • Hi Roger, my Fagan family are RC. Now this is going to be a long shot because of the traveling distances that might have happened, but I don't see Irish people traveling across Ireland but here's some more info on the spread.  We found 3 Fagan's living in Seapatrick, County Down,: one we believe is our John T. Fagan b. 1797 and is listed in Ancestry and rootsirland along with his wife Jane Bell b.1796  Other info is from Griffiths Valuation,on them, just births. But which is listed is his son which is our John Fagan b.1816 in County Down who married Sarah Stewart b. 1822-d.1896 in Gretna Green Dumfries-shire, Scotland and they lived in Carllisle, Cumberland England. One of his kids John moved to the USA in 1882 with his wife Mabel Armstrong and 3 kids, she died a year later and he married again  to Annie Sheehan (family of County Cork) and had several children of which one was my Grandfather Maurice J. Fagan Sr. This all comes from Ancestry.

Here's the crazy iffy info: There is a John Fagan b. 1797 in Meath RC baptized May 1797  Parish, Athboy. Father, Bryan Fagan Mother Cathy Gallagan this is from findmypast site. Now just maybe? He moved to Seapatrick, Co. Down? and I found a death record John Fagan b. 1797 who died in 1871 in  Diocese of Down & Connor Co. Antrim.

I know there have been a lot of Fagan's coming from Meath, WestMeath so I just thru this in there. So I am still trying to find out more on our John Fagan b. 1797

  • Hi Roger thanks so much for your research. I also was not sure about our John Fagan II birth, I have seen it as 1816 and also 1824 and 1826 so that is all questionable. But I do have info on our John Fagan from Ballyvalley, Bandbridge, Seapatrick from Ancestry and Griffith's Valuation for Ireland, I found this by chance looking at all the births of John Fagan being born in 1797 which John was listed as being John II father, Ancestry gave that info as John Fagan the 1st with his birthdate. But I got no other info with Ancestry and other web gen companies. So I tracked John Ist birthday as 1797 in County Down and it came up with one John Fagan also spelled Fagin in Balleyvalley, Bandbridge, Seapatrick. So I think this is where I am going with it. I have looked into the town of Bandbridge and they will look into their records to find someone and they charge about $20 US dollars. I think I should find out for sure if it's him or not. Ancestry also listed his wife as Jane Bell and gave her birth date too.

I know for sure that John Fagan II moved to Carlisle.Cumberland, England and married Sarah Stewart and their John Fagan III came over in 1882 like you had said also. All my family, father and his siblings were born in Coventry, RI, I was born in Provivence, RI

John III had married Mabel Armstrong had three kids and came over in 1882, Mabel died a year later and John later Married Annie Sheehan of Fall River, Mass. my Grandfather was born there too, then they move ot Coventry, RI. I have tin-types and picture post cards of all of them too. Just stuck on John Fagan 1st. But I will perservere for sure and pay to look into Bandbridge Geneology services.

Thanks again Roger you are a big help for everyone!!!!!.
