My name is Margaret Beedham and I am interested in finding out more about my great - great grandfather and his family who came from the townland of Ballyweely in County Down. His name was John Greenan born about 1854/5, and he came to England probably with his brother Patrick to train as a tailor in the Chesterfield (Derbyshire) area. He married Annie O'Brien in 1878 (she was born in India) His father was Peter (a farmer) and his mother Catherine Ross. Peter was a widower when he died in 1893 at Ballyweely at the age of 88. His son -in - law James Maginnis was present at his death. In the 1901 census James was married to Sarah who presumably was Peter's daughter. I'm sure there were other children and would love to know if I have any relatives still living in the Clonduff area.

    Full Abstract :

The 1909 Probate file should be in PRONI, Belfast. (Not on-line yet). The 1893 file will have been destroyed in the 1922 fire in Dublin. The 1879 will is on-line on the PRONI site:

There were evidently several Greenan families on that townland. Griffiths has Peter Grennan on plot 13 in Ballyweely, in 1864. Alice Grennan lives next door on plot 12. She?s likely to have been a close relative, as is Henry Greenan on plot 11.

The revaluation records show Peter?s house changing to Catherine in 1901, and by 1923 the farmhouse was down, and only the land was in use, held by Henry Grennan/Greenan.

Catherine may have been Peter?s daughter. This is her in 1901:

    Here?s Henry in 1901:

    Catherine in 1911:

The RC parish records for Clonduff only start in 1850 but you may find John and some of his siblings baptisms in them. A copy is held in PRONI.

  • Hi Margaret

I do believe we share our great great great grandfather!!!!!!  My gg grandfather was James Maginnis who married your Sarah Greenan in 1867,  Their son John Maginnis was my great grand father who was born 1881. I have been looking for some information on the Maginnis side for some time and by chance I came across this site and I am totally delighted.  I have the names of the remaining siblings of Sarah if you wish to contact me I would be more than willing to share the information.

  • Hi there

I’m descended from Catherine Greenan married to James McDemot/McKermot and Catherine’s father was Michael Greenan who died Ballydugan. My brother in law is descended from Henry Greenan and Anne Kearney. I suspect they are all related
