Catharine Burns born 1819 in County Down.  Found a record for a Catherine which could possible be her but not sure.  It lists that she was christened 29 August 1819 and parents were Bernard and Margaret.  Christened at Aghaderg.  I do know that she was Catholic and married a Joseph Gilmore Symth from Antrim who belonged to the Church of Scotland.  They emigrated to Canada about 1843/44.  Catherine had a sister named Jane who came with her.  Joseph was about 5 years younger.

Thank for any help

  • Hi Kathy,

There are Roman Catholic church records available for the diocese of Aghaderg (Dromore). These start from 1816 for baptismal and marriage records and 1838 for burial records. You can check these at the National Library of Ireland, Pos. 5504, or the Public Records of Northern Ireland (PRONI) MIC.1D/29. If you have any difficulty, you could try writing to the parish priest for more assistance.

Could you please post your message on the County Antrim page here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/county-antrim

Do you have any more information about the emigration to Canada? Generally, more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at, this could be a good place to find more information.

You could also try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) or the later Griffth's Valuation (1848-64). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

Please make sure you link anyone else in your family who is interested in their Irish heritage to our site - and indeed anyone else you know of Irish heritage.

    Kind regards,
