Hi Teresa,
Can you tell me whereabouts is Kilburne? I have googled it & there is a place in Waterford with the same name. Waterford is in Munster, a province similar to Ulster. If that is the place you are concerned with, the best route would be for you to repost this query and attach it to the local parish there. Otherwise if it is in Ulster, do let me know.
Best wishes & if I can help you further, let me know.

Hello Teresa,
I have gone to www.askaboutireland.ie and searched the placenames in the Griffith Valuation. Kilburne is a parish in Co. Waterford. I searched the valuation for any family by the name of MIddleton but didn't find any at all. I then searched the placename of Kilburne and trawled down through all the families listed there but didn't find any MIddletons either.
I then went to the 1901 census to see where any family of Middletons might be. The majority of Middletons lived in the northern counties with many families in and around Dublin and a few other counties. However there wasn't one family by the name of Middleton living in Co. Waterford in the 1901 or the 1911 census. I'm assuming thast there would have been some remnant of family still living there.
Are you sure she was born in Co. Waterford and her date of birth? If perhaps you got her details from a tombstone, census or newspaper cutting then I would advise that you keep a very open mind regarding dob.
Most people who emigrated were illiterate and undocumented. They didn't know how to spell their names and hadn't a clue as to what age they were. At the port of arrival their names were recorded phonetically, their ages were only guessed, and this is the information that followed them for the rest of their lives.
The proof of this occured in 1909 when the old age pension was introduced into ireland. People had to prove their ages and were forced to go through baptismal records to establish when they were born. That is why there is such HUGE discrepancies between ages in the 1901 census and the 1911 census of Ireland. Dates were found to be out by many many years in some cases.
Kind regards,
Anne Dennehy
