The current Anglican church is in Lower Moville--St. Columbs goess back to 1858. I assume the parish staff can direct you to the location of the prior church. See links below for background.

  • some notes on the earlier church from the Upper Movile civil parish entry entry in Lewis 1837 : ....The church is an ancient, small, and inconvenient edifice, on the shore of the lough; it was built by the Carey family, in 1741, as a private chapel, and afterwards became a chapel of ease, and eventually the parish church; but, being much too small, a larger is about to be erected..

  • the same Lewis entry mentions among the principle occupants of the parish an 'L. Carey esq.' of White Castle, possibly part of the Carey family mentioned in connection with the chapel. Whitechurch is the name of a townland, right on the shores of the lough, so may have been the location of the old church. There's no church specifically indicated on the 1st OSI edition maps (c1837 )- but you can see the layout of the townland and other features.

  • Teresa,

I am descended from the Daniel Toy family of Moville.  I am interested as you are in the church history and records of Moville Parish.  Check out this website!  It has photos and the history of churches in Lower and Upper Moville.
