Hello, I am searching for any information about my 2nd great grandfather who is listed as being born in 1834 in Drumhome, Ballintra, Co. Donegal.

His parents were Alexander Leslie and Isabella Oliver whose family names I have found listed in the Griffith's Survey.

I am very curious to know if there are any Leslie or Oliver family members still in the area and any other connections there may be.

Best Regards,

Catherine

  • Hi Catherine

In case you don't have it, here's the baptism record from www.rootsireland.ie/:

    Name:Alexander LeslieDate of Birth:12-Mar-1841
    Date of Baptism:11-Apr-1841Address:BallymagrortyParish/District:DRUMHOMEGender:MaleCountyCo. Donegal
    Denomination:Church Of Ireland
    Father:Alexander LeslieMother:IsabellaOccupation:Farmer

I couldn't find the parents' marriage record I'm afraid.

This look promising as a baptism record for Alexander senior:

    Name:Alexander LeslieDate of Birth:
    Date of Baptism:03-Mar-1810Address:DrumhomeParish/District:DRUMHOMEGender:MaleCountyCo. Donegal
    Denomination:Church Of Ireland
    Father:Thomas LeslieMother:Sarah Watson

    Parents' marriage:

    Date of Marriage:11-May-1809
    Parish / District:DRUMHOME
    County:Co. Donegal
    Husband

    Age:Full Age (Over 21)
    Full Age (Over 21)Status:

No luck with Thomas's birth so the trail runs out here I'm afraid.

There is 1 Leslie and 5 Olivers in Donegal in the Irish phone book (http://www.118.ie/)

The earliest Irish Census that includes Donegal records is 1851 but there are none of either surname in it.

The Tithe Applotments (free online at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 8 Leslies 1825 to 34 & 13 Olivers

  • Thank you very much for the speedy reply!

Alexander jr would be the brother of my 2nd great grandfather Henry who was born in Donegal on May 18 1834.

This is all new information to me, as I've just recently (and very happily) learned of this paternal family link to Ireland, I am glad to know that there could still be family there who I may be able to connect with at some point.

    Thanks again

  • Hi Catherine

Your gg grandfather Henry was the brother of my g grandfather Jeremiah ( Jerry ). There are several Leslie families currently living around Drumhome Parish and I believe all descend from the younger brothers of Alexander born 1810.

My family tree is public on Ancestry.com. My email address is ccckilt@aol.com if you would like to connect. I have done much research our Leslie origins and have recently connected through DNA with Leslie and Oliver descendants.
