I'd like ideas on how to locate information on my ancestor, Charles McCallick (U.S. spelling) or McCallig,  who was born in Donegal in 1835.  Unfortunately, I don't have his parent's names or the name of the parish where he was born.

Charles left Ireland for the U.S. around 1855. He married Mary Rose, also of Ireland.  I think this marriage took place in the U.S. but it's possible they married in Ireland.

Griffith's Valuation shows McCalligs and McColligs in Fawnmore, Carrownamaddy, Derryreel, and Magheramenagh, Clondahorky Parish and Kilmacreddan, Inver Parish.

I believe Charles was related to the James McCallig, son of John McCallig, who married Bridget Brazor in 1868 in Inver.  However, I can't prove if Charles and James are brothers or cousins.

Any help or ideas on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.  Many thanks!

I looked at the 1901 census www.census.nationalarchives.ie to see where the McCallig name was found. There were 71 individuals with the surname McCallig. More than half of the McCalligs were in Killaghtee civil parish. This parish is the the parish to the west from Inver parish in southwest Co. Donegal. I would focus my search in that area.

You may also want to look at this website dedicated to Donegal genealogy.

Thank you very much for your help. I will search in the Killaghtee parish as you suggested.
