Joseph Galbraith, age 21, departed Londonderry on the Admiral Hawke about November 1, 1767 and arrived in Charles Town South Carolina on Dec 28 with 90 other poor Protestants.  Joseph perhaps later married Martha Peoples, age 13 when she arrived with mother Margaret on the same ship.  Others on the Hawke included John Walker (later married widow Martha Galbreath or Gilbreath), Benjamin Cockman, William Douglass, John or James Drafter, James Gillespie, and William Brown.  Joseph may have come with or been confused with James Galbraith. Note, that Joseph may have lived beyond Derry and only departed from there.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I have had a look on www.rootsireland,ie and there are 5 baptism records for a Joseph Galbraith. The earliest is in 1723 while the next most recent is in 1872. It may be that Joseph was born in a parish and at a time that predates the parish records. You could use this site to check the number of Galbraith marriages to see if you could pinpoint a marriage for Joseph?s parents.

Remember to post any new information that you find here. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

Best of luck with your search

  • Looking for family connections to George Galbraith who was said to have  been born in County Derry in 1905. He moved to Australia and married into the Gilbert family of Alexandra Victoria .

Have you already posted a message on the site (beyond what you have above?) If not, it would be best to post a fresh message so that our volunteers will be able to see and possibly assist.

    Best wishes
