I have followed my maternal grandmother's line back through the generations that settled in Nova Scotia to the family members that emmigrated from Derry. As the story goes is Joseph B. McLellan was born April 1715 (Londonderry) and died July 1777. He was possibly a farmer in the Londonderry area. He married Isabelle Steele in 1738 in Londonderry. Isabelle was born somewhere in Ireland in 1719. Her father's name was William Steele. My ancestor was their son who was named Samuel and was born in 1751 in the Derry area. The family emigrated to Canada around 1775 where in the spring of 1776 he married Margaret Elizabeth Dinsmore O'Brien (daughter of Timothy O'Brien from Ballykelly who along with his family emmigrated to Canada around the same time). As the descendents have been listed as Presbyterian in the Canadian Census, I'm assuming that the McLellan's were Presbyterian in Ireland as well. Researching in Ireland in the 1700s is very hard going due to the general lack of records. If you don’t know where they lived it’s a needle in a haystack. Ideally you need to know the person’s exact denomination and the townland or parish they lived in to have any chance of finding them, and even then there may not be any records for that location.

My name is James McLellan. This is also my family I live on the Canadian side. We came here after the expolsion of the Acadian in Nova-Scotia. I would also like to have more information about Joseph and Samuel, who was called pitiful Sam??
