I am looking for an Ann Thompson who in the English census 1851 says born BELFAST. Her age is 81/82 in 1851. Hopefully she is the mother of Edward (Anketell) Jones b. Belfast 1792. Other than census how can she be traced?
Mnay thanks

Hi Rosie
The only birth/baptism record of Ann Thompson in Antrim is 1761 in Shankill, St Anne's Belfast parish.
The site charges to view the full record which should have the parents' names.

Thankyou for your reply. I think as her sons are called by surname JONES (Edward A & Henry M) that this is her married name from a 2nd marriage, only guessing as her surname different and she would be too old to be the wife's mother due to big age difference beteen Edward and his wife. Did mothers have different surnames? Both boys give Belfast as place of birth in English 1851 census.
Thanks for your endevours.

Hi. I am still looking for 2 brothers who have the surname JONES and give their birthplace as BELFAST in an English census of 1841 and 1851. One is Edward Anketell JONES b. 1792 and the other is Henry Moutray JONES b. 1793. It would seem from the census that Edward gives his mother as Ann Thompson also born in Belfast and aged 81/82 in 1851. As she has a different name from the boys she must have remarried/divorced...was that possible then? There are Anketell's of Anketell's Grove and I believe Moutray is from Scotland and reasonably common in N.Ireland. My understanding is that females would often keep their maiden surname as a Christian name for the next generation.
It is very frustrating as I have met a brick wall with tracing the parentage of these 2 boys who left Belfast probably in c1820 to start a very successful provision merchants business in London. Any clues as to where I should go next would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks.

Hi Rosie
There are 2 baptism records of Edward Jones in Antrim 1792 on www.rootsireland.ie/
Perhaps it's the same record twice as both have mother first name Ann (but not Thompson)
http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y
There is also a record of Henry with mother Ann 1789
http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y
There are 2 records of Ann Thompson 1773 - 1 is in Donegal & 1 in Monaghan

You need to purchase credit to view the full records on rootsireland but they will have the parish and MAYBE the parents' names.
If you get the parish from the records you may want to post again to that parish
