James hughes, 1829-1903, son of William Hughes (1796-1851) and Jane Lackie (1796-1851) was married to Mary Woods, (1830-1885) daughter of Joseph Woods. James immigrated 31 january, 1865 to Toronto, Canada with his wife and 4 children. http://www.theshipslist.com/ships/passengerlists/assisted.shtml    4 more born in Toronto. I don't have any other information, other than William and Jane and a daughter all died of "a fever" in 1851. My guess would be famine related, considering the date. James and Mary were married 10 June, 1852 Ardtrea, Derry. Any help would be great.

  • Nancy,

Do you have a copy of James and Mary’s civil marriage certificate? If so that should give you their townlands (addresses) at the time of their marriage , plus their fathers occupations. That information should help trace the families further. (Post it on this board if you have it).

Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church which should be on the certificate, (unless it was a Registry Office marriage). That church may be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

The marriage was registered in Magherafelt on 4th June 1852. You can view the original certificate on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2 (sterling) to a view a certificate.
