Hi everyone. I’m trying to find information about my Evans and Ewart ancestors.
Jane Murray (nee Evans) was born in Ireland around 1795. Her parent were James Evans and Janet Ewart. She and her brother Robert Evans moved to Scotland at some point. She married John Murray around 1820, probably in Scotland - John was Irish, but I don’t know where from.
According to a census record from Scotland, Jane's brother Robert Evans was born in Castledawson, so I am assuming this is where the Evans family came from, and perhaps also the Ewarts. I have tried searching for them in FindMyPast, but with no success.
I would be interested to know if anyone has information about them, or is also looking for the same family.

Hi Iain
No luck with your Robert but tried Castledawson parish on www.rootsireland.ie/ and found this one:
Name:Robert EvansDate of Birth:03-Nov-1861
Date of Baptism:30-Dec-1861Address:DerrygarveParish/District:CASTLEDAWSONGender:MaleCountyCo. Derry
Denomination:Presbyterian
Father:James EvansMother:Sarah StintonOccupation:By coincidence, father is James also
There are 21 other Evans birth/baptisms from that parish from 1806 to 1861 on roots
You might want to check Derrygrave
There are 28 Evans marriage records from Castledawson of similar time-frame to the baptisms including 3 who married Ewarts but they are 1870-88
Frustratinly the Tithe Applotments (free) don't have Derry records!
The best alternate source is PRONI (proni.gov.au)
If you can navigate to the Name Search (they've just changed the site unfortunately!) you'll find 85 Evans including some in Derryin the 1740 Protestant Householders List
No luck with Ewarts in Derry however
The Irish Census of 1831 (free online) has 79 Evans in Londonderry; there is 1 James
Given Magherafelt's close proximity to Castledawson those Evans are probably the most relevant

I have a large number of Evans events recorded in my database, including a number of Jane and Robert Evans, from various townlands in the parish of Magherafelt, taken from the church records of the C of I and Presbyterian churches in that area. Contact me at ronaldjdale@netscape.net and I can share any Ewart and Evans information that I have in my database.

There were Ewart's married into my Leslie family. They lived at Leslie's Hill in Derrygarve near Castledawson.

Dear Col, Ron and Patricia,
Thank you for the information you provided. Col, sorry - for some reason I only just saw your post from last year.
Lots for me to do here. I will look further into Derrygarve - looks like it's very close to Castledawson.
One of the complications for me is that I don't know whether they would have been Catholic or Church of Ireland. Their descendants seem to have followed both at different times. So I have two sets of registers to search, and they are in different places.
Ron, I'll email you shortly. I would be interested to see what information you have.
Regards,
Iain

I suspect that the Ewart's married into my Leslie family were Protestant if that is of any help at all. I've never actually tried to follow the Ewart line backwards so I don't have much info I can give you about them. I think the earliest Ewart I have in the tree was born about 1841.

Thanks Patricia. That would certainly explain why I couldn't find them in the NLI records!

I have records of th e baptisms of several of the children of David Ewart and Nancy Evans of Derrygarve from 1848 to 1869 at the Woods Chapel. David Ewart's father was also named David. The elder David and his wife, name unknown, baptized 6 children at the Castledawson Presbyterian church. My guess is that the Ewarts were Presbyterian and the Evans were C of Ireleand.
