I am seeking any information of the Scantleton name.  It is believed 2 brothers departed Ireland mid 1800's.  Johnathon Scantleton came to Australia whilst his brother travelled to the US and lived largely in Wisconsin.  Any information of Scantleton history from this area would be much appreciated.  It is believed that a Mary Scantleton's death was registered on 29.4 1874 in Magherafelt Co Londonderry.  No other information is forthcoming.  John Scantleton, NSW Australia

  • I can see the death for Mary Scantleton in Magherafelt on 29.4.1874 aged 76. Also a marriage for a Sarah Scandleton (as GRONI spell it) to John Fields on 30.1.1864 in Cookstown, Co Tyrone. No Scantleton births in Ireland post 1864.

You can view the original certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

    https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk

You will need to open an account and buy some credits. It costs £2.50 (sterling) to a view a certificate.

So it’s  a very rare name or alternatively it may have been spelled significantly differently in Ireland  though I am unable to offer any definite options. Scanlon or Scantlan perhaps.

There were no Scantletons in the 1831 census for Co. Derry. And none in the 1901 census of the whole country.

If you know what denomination the family were you could try searching the church records for Magherafelt. The RC records are on-line on the NLI site and on Ancestry but for Church of Ireland or Presbyterian I think a visit to PRONI in Belfast would be required. You might need to employ a researcher for that if you can’t get there yourself.

  • Many thanks Elwyn for your comments.  They are very helpful.  Looks like I'm going to have to get off my bum and come to Ireland.  Merry Christmas,  John
