I am looking for a birth record and a marriage record of my great-great grandparents, William Montague and Catherine Convery, who both lived in Magherafelt before immigrating to Glasgow.
William Montague, Roman Catholic, Coal Miner, born circa 1839, (buried Dec. 20 1909, St. Peter’s Dalbeth, Glasgow, age 70)
Catherine Convery, (died May 17, 1907 in Glasgow, age 61). Her parents, according to her death record, were James Convery & Ann Morris. I have seen the name James Covery related to Magherafelt records (father of the groom).
William and Catherine’s first son, Hough or Hugh, was born in Glasgow, circa 1869, so they must have emigrated before that date. They had 5 more children. The last, Edward, was my father’s father. This information I obtained from the Scottish census, 1981, 1891, 1901. My father, also Edward Montague, came to Canada in 1949 or 1950.
There is a Hugh Montague, died April 18, 1858, age 72, buried in plot #39 at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church Coolcam, Desertmartin, Co. Derry. I thought he might be William’s father since he named his first son Hugh.
I found this grave through www.discovereverafter.com
I tried "Rootsireland" with no sucess. I was told that perhaps someone might volunteer to help me?
Yours truly,
(Mary) Lynn Montague

Hi Patty,
Thank you for your message.I hope that someone in the area does volunteer to help you find these records.
In the meantime you could try contacting the local parish priest directly for some possible assistance. Here are their contact details:
http://www.magherafeltparish.org/parish-team/priests
A useful website when it comes to Catholic records is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available and where copies are kept. For Magherafelt parish follow this link:
As you can see Derry Genealogy Centre also have copies so it may be an idea to contact them for some assistance, however a fee may apply.. Here is their email: genealogy@derrycity.gov.uk
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
Kind regards,
