Thank you Elwyn fo rthat speedy reply. I do have the information on Margaret McLeish (ms O'Hara) as follows. Father John O"HARA (deceased) mother Jane O'HARA (ms BROWN). Death date March 22 1885 Greenock Scotland. Informant Hugh MCLEISH (son) his mark. As regards the husband it merely states married to James MCLEISH- labourer. I presume this means he was still alive but elusive at that date. I do not think the Bernard that you found in the baptism records is any connection.

By the way I wonder if others are finding the new improved site as difficult to navigate as I am. I find it very frustrating to having to log in etc---have my password rejected ( several times !) , then be given yet another login, then having to re submit all the information previously given to reply to the work of all you wonderful volunteers . Surely an acknowledgement of the message and a button to reply to the correspondence would be simpler? Could you please pass on my comments to the webmaster? Thanks yet again .

I looked for deaths for John & Jane O’Hara pre 1885 in the Coleraine registration area. Death registration only started in Ireland in 1864 so if they died before that there won’t be a statutory record and since the RC church generally doesn’t keep burial records there may not be any record of the deaths at all. However I did find a death for a John O’Hara on 13.3.1873 aged 75 in the Coleraine area. You might want to have a look at that certificate. (I could not find any death for a Jane O’Hara and so feel she may have died before 1864, or outside the Coleraine area). You can view the original death certificates on-line on the GRONI website, using the “search registrations” option:

Thank you once again Elwyn. Is there a site where I can check what information would be available for an 1873 death? Would it indicate the person's marital status, partner's name, parents names, number of living children as well as cause of death and address at time of decease.? If the information is only minimal i would need to re consider whether or not to look at the certificate.

There is a site to view the death certificate. It’s the GRONI site. I have given you the link to it in my last post. It’ll cost you £2.50 to view the certificate. An Irish death certificate is the same as an English death certificate (and sadly contains much less than Scottish certificates). What you will get is: place & date of death; deceased’s name; sex; marital status; age last birthday; occupation; cause of death; informant’s name and address; date of registration.
