Due to the efforts of my father's cousin; before the age of the internet, I have my family traced back to Jessey (Jessi) Forsythe c. 1800 - 15 February 1884 in or around Parish Dunluc Townland Priestland West. Antrim. His son William John Forsythe c 1835 - 18 July 1894. Married Sarah McKew 24 May 1859. Per Griffith's Valuation Book 1850-1860, page 28, he was a tenant of Townland Priestland, West, House, Forge and Garden.

Firstly, I'm hoping to learn more about Jessy Forsythe

Secondly, I'd be pleased to assist other Forsythe's who may be part of the extended family tree. Since the William John Forsythe above nearly every generation has alternated William John with John William for first born sons.

Thirdly, I am finally realizing a lifelong dream of visiting the home sod this coming September to learn more about my ancestors, one branch who emigrated to the states in the early 1890's

  • Dear  jgforsythe

Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out. I hope you are looking forward to your trip to Ireland.

I assume that as you have a lot of research already done, that you have seen the baptisms on rootsirelandie. There are two listed for Co. Antrim and Co. Derry in 1800 for a James and John Forsythe as well as two for a John in 1802 and 1803 in Down and Armagh. Is this inforamtion you already have?

    Best wishes

  • Thank you so much for your reply. I have been trying to build upon the research my father's cousin conducted in the late 1980' and 90's. The furthest he was able to trace was back to a Jessey or Jesse Forsythe c1800.It may be likely that there were also a John or James Forsythe of the same era, although their birth places are not in sync with what appears to be my family's stomping grounds.

Jesse  apparently had a sister, Jane Forsythe, born 1799, died 29 May 1883. She never married. Jesse's date of death was 15, Feb 1884.

It appears that my family ranged from Portrush south to Coleraine, east to Ballmoney, then back up to Bushmills. A great deal of the information came from Isabel (Forsythe) Wallace of Englishtown House where she ran a farm. She was alive as of 1993. She also had a sister, Mary Jane Fosythe Ramsey who ran a farm complex just south of Ballylintagh(?).

I am very much appreciative of your taking the trouble of contacting me.,

    Best Regards,

    John Forsythe

  • Hello John,

I am also a descendent of Jesse Forsythe, through one of his daughters. I'm curious if you have found any more information on the family since your last post.

I recently learned that Jesse's wife's name was Ellen Connor, but have not been able to trace back any further. Would be interested in any information you can provide!

    Regards,

    Diane

My apologies for not keeping om touch with you. Now that I am retired I will be more dilegent to communication. As it turns out I have made contact with Eric and Gladys Wallace of Coleraine. Eric's mother was Isabel Forsythe. We have visited them twice in the last couple of years and through them made contacts with the Ramsey & Wallace extentions the of the Forsythe families of Derry, Bushmills, Ballymoney and Coleraine. I will provide you with additional details shortly. I have an extensive family tree chartered on Ancestry.com but not sure how I can share ot with you. I'm looking forward to sharing ancestral information with you.

    Best Regards,
