Hello Clare,

 William [K] Cochrane Shannon was born circa 1792 Derrybeg, died 1866 Stockwell South Australia.

He married for the first time to Jane Hopkins in Londonderry in 1818 and for the second time to Mary S Moore in 1839 Londonderry. Jane died in 1836 in Lurgantea.

William is said to have three siblings -

Samuel Shannon bc 1770 Derrybeg, Elizabeth Ann Shannon bc 1788 County Donegal and John Shannon bc 1779 Derrybeg.

It is possible that their father was James Shannon bc 1850 Keenaught District Drumachose who probably married a lady by the name of Cochrane.

Sorry for the delay in getting abck to you.

The townland of Derrybeg occurs in two civil parishes in Co. Donegal; Gartan and Tullaghobegly. The earliest Church of Ireland (I am assuming he was Church of Ireland given the names) records for Gartan begin in 1881 for baptisms and 1815 for marriages. For Tullaghhobegley records begin in 1848 for baptisms and 1845 for marriages. Any baptism or marriage event in that parish before this time will not be recorded. As civil registration doesn?t begin in Ireland until 1864, we are dependent on parish records prior to this.

Given that this gap exists, it would be difficult to progress using the conventional parish records.  However I did see a Samuel Shannon listed on the Flax Growers for Ulster 1796:

You may have to use sources like this to link (or try to link) people together and this may (for the time being) feel like just an information gathering exercise, but at some point in the future new sources will come online and hopefully provide the answers.
