Cochranes in Coleraine

Yes, it would help if I said what I was looking for:-)  Any information on the parents of Joseph Cochrane.  I believe their names are William T. and Ann (Liken).  I've seen many spelling of Liken so am not sure of that one.  William was possibly born in Downpatrick, but Joseph was definitely born near Coleraine.

Joseph?s birth is before the start of statutory birth registration in Ireland (1864)_ so you won?t get a birth certificate. You might get a baptism. Do you know what denomination he was?

That should give you his father?s name. It should also give you the family?s townland (address) which may enable you to trace them in other records.

Let me know the fathers name, occupation and the townland and I?ll see what I can turn up for you.

So I found their marriage certificate and both his father, William Cochrane, and Margaret's father, John McKeeman, were farmers.  The marriage was in Castlerock, but Joseph Cochrane lived in Blakes.

Tradition was to marry in the bride?s church so that?d be the place to look for her baptism and that of any siblings.

Griffiths for 1859 lists William Cochrane on plot 1 in Blakes Upper. That was a 61 acre farm. That?s on the modern Blakes Rd to the west of Coleraine. That farm passed to John Cochrane in 1864, then to Joseph in 1876. He vacated it in 1885.

There were no Cochranes living in Blakes in the 1831 census so that suggests they arrived between then and 1859.

If Joseph was baptised in the area and was Presbyterian or Church of Ireland, then you may just have to search the records in PRONI, if you cannot find him on-line. Coleraine 1^st & 2nds records for 1848 are on-line (on rootsireland by they only have Dunboe from 1875, so you would need to try PRONI for those earlier records. (A personal visit is generally required).

Hi, I've just received the results of a 111 marker y-DNA test taken by a great grandson of Joseph Cochrane (1848-1905).  It is the third y-chromosome DNA test I've arranged for descendants of Dunboe parish ancestors (the other townlands: Burren More and Quilly).  Good news is that they all match my family (which moved from the Dunboe-Macosquin parish area to south of Limavady around 1800.  But even more interestingly, the closest relatives to the great grandson of Joseph Cochrane are the other two Dunboe parish Cochranes.

Would be very interested to compare notes with you!
