Greetings from Maryland, USA. I am planning a trip to Draperstown/Magherafelt area in 2015 and would appreciate help finding Henderson relatives from there.

George Henderson from Carnamoney and son William Henderson Born 1890 . What is the best source for family documents?

Looking forward to hearing from you folks in beautiful Ireland!

  • Jim:

I found an 11 year old Willie Henderson living with his uncle William in Carnamoney in the 1901 census. I further looked for civil death index records for a George Henderson.in the Magherafelt registration district. There was one in 1897 and another in 1900. I assume that one or the other was the father of Willie.

I did not see Willie in the 1911 census.

You may want to check the online phonebook to see if you can find any leads regarding relatives.

    Enjoy your trip.

  • George appears to have died in 1900. I found this probate abstract on the PRONI website. (The will itself should be in PRONI ? the public record office - in Belfast).

Probate of the Will of George Henderson late of Carnamoney County Londonderry Farmer who died 13 March 1900 granted at Londonderry to William John Boon Farmer. Effects ?76

    This one is on-line:

Probate of the Will of William Henderson late of Carnamoney County Londonderry Farmer who died 25 March 1897 granted at Londonderry to William Henderson of Carnamoney and Robert Hanna of Mulnavoo said County Farmers.

    http://applications.proni.gov.uk/DCAL_PRONI_WillsCalendar/willsSearchRe…

Henderson Robert A. of Carnamoney county Londonderry farmer died 9 November 1940 Administration Londonderry 3 January to Margaret Henderson the widow. Effects ?418 15s.

George?s farm appears to have been plots 21B & C in Carnamoney. That was a farmhouse, outbuildings and 10 acres, beside Wm Henderson?s farm. Presumably a relative.

Plot 21B today appears to be on the Weddell Bridge Rd, which runs off the Five Mile Straight, a few miles west of Tobermore.

  • Hi Roger:

Thank you for that response.  I had also seen those records of Willie (William R. Henderson) age 11...he was my grandfather and he immigrated to US in 1909.  I have extensive records on him both in Ireland and the US.

I  was hoping to learn more about his sister Sarah Jane Henderson.  She was born 17 Apr 1892 and later baptized in Draperstown Presbyterian Church on 27 Oct 1892.  I found one census record of her living with an uncle in the 1911 Ireland census...and not much more!  Their father George Henderson died in Ireland 13 Mar 1900 and I have seen the record of his will...which explains why her and Willie were living with relatives in the 1901 and 1911 census respectively. I cannot locate records of George's wife, Eliza(beth) Ellen Boone(e) beyond their marriage.

And I cannot find further information about William R.'s sister Sarah Jane.  I have reason to believe she was the only sibling in that family that stayed in Ireland (all the rest having come to the US) but I cannot confirm that.  I would like to find out what happend to her...married? children? any decendants possibly still in Ireland?

BTW...I live in Parkton, MD and I learned about you and this site in the North Country News article.

    Thanks for your help,

    Jim Henderson

  • Jim:

Eliza Ellen may have died in 1896. See the index record below. I also looked for a civil marriage index record for Sarah Jane and found one possible record in 1920. ( I assume she lived in the Magherafelt registration district in 1911). You would have to get the record from GRONI to figure out which of the males this Sarah married and if she possibly is your ancestor.https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

The records cost around 2 pounds.

My collegue Elwyn from Co. Antrim may have other insights.

Glad your saw the article. I wasn't too anxious to do it but decided for that it was a good way to publicize Ireland Reaching Out.

Let me know if you have further questions.

  • Jim,

Might be worth having a look at William Boon?s will to see if it makes any provision for Sarah Jane. That could help assess if she was alive or married at that date.

Probate of the Will of William Boon late of Ballynure, Co. Londonderry, Farmer who died 29 March 1920 granted at Londonderry 11 April 1921 to Samuel Scott, Farmer. Effects: ?108 0s 0d.

However I see a marriage between a William Boone and Sarah Henderson on 29.9.1920 regd in Magherafelt. That looks fairly promising. You can view it for ?2 on the GRONI site:

  • Good morning Elwyn,

Thank you for the marriag lead on Sarah and William Boone.  I believe that to be our Sarah's marriage record.  It indicates her father was George (deceased) which fits our Sarah.  I'm now trying to find any possible children of Sarah and William Boone but not having much luck there either.  I'll be coming to Ireland this summer for my third time and I'm determined to find some cousins this time!  Sarah' s decendants would be my last hope as the rest of her siblings came to the US.  Any ideas???

    Thanks again,

    Jim

  • Jim,

Birth records in Northern Ireland post 1920 are not on-line anywhere. GRONI (the General Register Office) in Chichester St, Belfast has them. However you either need to e-mail them and pay them to search, or go in person and pay for a 1 day index search (?8). If you search there, on father and mother?s surnames, leaving the child?s name blank it should bring up any children they had (assuming they stayed in Northern Ireland).

You need to make an appointment for an index search:
