Looking for family of Matthew Eardley my Grandfather. Matthew was born on March 29, 1881 to James and Elizabeth Eardley. Baptized on Sept 18, 1881 in the Parish of Ballynascreen in the county of Londonderry by R. Bennett. He had a younger sister Mary Anne. She won 1st prize for an examination in Holy Scriptures and Church Formularies in 1898 from the United Diocese of Derry and Raphoe. The prize was a Holy Bible which was passed down to myself. He came to the U.S. in 1904. I plan on returning to Ireland this September and would like to locate family of Matthew and give them the Bible. I would appreciate any help finding relatives of my Grandfather Matthew. Mary Anne would be 24 in the 1911 census. I do not know if she married. It looks like Eardley's in Draperstown is a good match.

  • Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I could not find the family in the 1901 census but did find them in Draperstown in 1911. See below. I also looked at the online phone book for Northern Ireland (see link below) but could not find any Eardley entries. Did Mary Anne marry?

  • Thank you Mr McDonnell for your reply. I do not know if Mary Anne got married. The 1911 census shows Mary Anne as 24 years old and that would match up with being in 4th grade in 1898. It also shows her brother Samuel being 23 years old. It also shows there being 7 children alive at that time. Mattthew left in 1904 and unless Samuel was the only other son and the rest were daughters or the other children moved out or also left Ireland by that time. Was there a census around 1900 in Ireland? And if so where could I look it up? How about a 1920 census? I greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

  • William:

There was a 1901 census and I did a search but could not find them.  http://census.nationalarchives.ie/ See what you can find.

There was a 1926 census but it has not been released to the public and as of now it won't be released until 2026.

  • Hi, I just came across this thread. My grandmother died on Monday. Her maiden name was violet eardley. She was from draperstown and she was born in 1920. I'm pretty sure she was one of 7 children. I need to check with my dad to confirm who his grandfather was but there is a possibility that it was Samuel Eardley. I will check tomorrow and come back to you.

  • Hi, checked today just to let you know that Samuel Eardley was my great grandfather. Samuel was married to Eleanor and they had 7 children. 1 of the 7 children was my grandmother, violet eardley. She married Harry Charles and they had 1 child Errol. Errol is my dad. Hope you found this helpful.

  • David:

William should be getting e-mails telling him that someone has commented on a message that he was involved with. Possibly his e-mail address has changed since 2016 or his address is the same but he is not reading the e-mails?

This is Bill Mckenna and I saw your reply of May 3rd and the most recent replies. I have been very busy lately and when I saw your May 3rd reply I could not remember my password and I just got back from being away. I am very happy to get your reply so we can exchange information. I never did get the chance to revisit Ireland yet but I am planning to get back in the near future. I look forward to understanding the family connection between our families. Looking forward to talking with you soon.

  • Hi great to hear from you. I can certainly give information on the Eardley’s from draperstown. I think that Matthew Eardley would have been my grandmothers uncle. I still researching the family tree presently and I know that some of the eardleys moved to Belfast in the early 1900’s.

Do you have an email address that I can email you?

    Thanks

    David

  • HI David and Bill - I'll be in touch to get you talking to each other directly.  Wonderful to see such a direct connection created.

We'd love if you could create some profiles for the Eardley Family (DOB pre 1918) on our Ancestor Chronicles.  Perhaps you can collaborate on these as there is an edit feature which enables one person to create and another to add information.  This would create the opportunity for other descendants to get in touch.

    Best regards

    Laura
