George Clyde was born in Aghadowey, Derry about 1833-1838. his father was Thomas and he was a farmer. His mother was Mary Nully or Nelly ( the writing on Georges marriage certifcate is hard to decipher). I would like to know more about the families. George left Ireland for Australia and married Anne Murtagh ( Murta also used in Australia) in 1863 at Kyneton, Victoria, Australia.

  • I had a look in the 1831 census for Aghadowey but there are no Clyde households listed. In Griffiths Valuation for 1859 there is one Clyde household in the parish, a William Clyde who was farming in Crossmakeever. He had plot 1 which was a 16 acre farm.  There were no Clydes there by the time of the 1901 census. That household appears to have arrived after 1831 and died out by 1882..

    Probate abstracts:

Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Rachel Clyde late of Crossmakeever County Londonderry a Married Woman deceased who died 10 May 1879 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Elizabeth Edmiston of Fernlester in said County Wife of Archibald Edmiston the personal representative of William Clyde the Husband.

Letters of Administration (with the Will annexed) of the personal estate of William Clyde late of Crossmakeever County Londonderry Farmer deceased who died 18 June 1882 at same place were granted at Londonderry to Elizabeth Edmiston of Fernlester in said County (Wife of Archibald Edmiston) the Daughter and a Legatee.

William’s will can be seen on-line on the PRONI website. It mentions several daughters but no mention of any sons.

You don’t say what denomination your family were. Judging by the 1831 census, the majority of Clydes in the county were Presbyterian with a smaller number being Church of Ireland. Unfortunately neither Aghadowey Presbyterian church nor the Church of Ireland has any records for the 1830s. So it may be difficult to trace this family.
