The only Thomas McCloy I can see in the 1831 census was resident in Clagan. Perhaps that?s your family?

Looking at Griffiths Valuation for 1859, there?s a Thomas McCloy in Clagan (can?t say whether it?s the same one as in 1831). He?s on plot 5 which was a farmhouse, outbuildings and a half acre. Next door was Wm McCloy on plot 4 and John on plot 3, both with small farms. They?d likely be relatives. These 3 properties today are on Clagan Park, just off the Agivey Rd, north of Kilrea.

There was still one McCloy farm there in 1901:

The above couple appear to be James McCloy and Sarah Reid. Their marriage was registered in Coleraine on 7.8.1863.

This couple may be John McCloy and Mary Nelson, whose marriage was registered in Coleraine on 26.6.1864.

You can look at both certificate son-line on the GRONI site for ?2 each should confirm whether they both hailed from Clagan, and also what their fathers? names were.

These families were Presbyterian so for early records you would need to search the Presbyterian churches in  that area, notably Aghadowey, Kilrea 1^st & 2^nd and perhaps Killaig. (Copies are held in PRONI, Belfast). Kilrea 2nds are on the rootsireland site (subscription) but the others are not on-line anywhere so far as I am aware.

This site has a record of Ann McCloy of Clagan marrying on 1.12.1845. her father was Wm McCloy. She married James Duncan.

Hi all. I have great great grandparents from Claggan Aghadowey areas. James McCloy 1820, daughter Eliza Jane married to Mathew Curry. John McCloy 1841 married to Mary Nelson 1845 and all their children. Any information or photos would be very much appreciated. Thank you. Jean

Here’s the marriage for John McCloy & Mary Nelson in 1864. Tradition was to marry in the bride’s church so Garvagh 2nd Presbyterian may be the Nelson family church. Its records start in 1830. (Copy in PRONI in Belfast).  Mary was living in Bovagh when she married and John in Collins.

Griffiths Valuation for Collins (1859) lists a James McCoy in a small labourer’s cottage (plot 5b) on the McMurtrey farm. I’d hazard a guess that’s your James McCloy. Father and son were both bleachers. That’s a process in making quality linen.

Here’s Eliza Jane’s marriage in 1865 where again she lived in Collins.  I note that it was in the local Register Office. That can be a sign of a mixed marriage.  So we don’t get a clue as to which church she had attended. But it might be Aghadowey Presbyterian. Her brother John McCloy looks to have been a witness.

This might be James McCloy’s death in 1897. Informant was daughter Martha (though I suspect that might actually be daughter in law):

Lisnamuck & Collins are just a hundred yards away from each other. McCloy family in 1901:

Couple married in 1896. The father’s occupation of “watchman” fits with bleaching work. A watchman was required on every bleach green to ensure animals didn’t walk over the product etc.

There was a Letty McCloy in Lisnamuck in the 1831 census. Family were Presbyterian.
