Hi,

I have attached a bible entry from my GGG grandmother Sarah Arthur. It states the bible was given to her in 1854 by the Aghadowey Church Sunday School.

If anyone has any idea as to which church this bible was from, that would be great! Thanks.

  • The majority of people named Arthur in Co Derry in the 1831 & 1901 censuses were Presbyterian. The only household in Aghadowey in the 1831 were Presbyterian. I?d therefore be inclined to try Aghadowey Presbyterian church to see if they recognise it. (They?ve no baptisms prior to 1855 though, if that?s where you think she was baptised).

  • Thank you for your reply.

If this helps the Reverand's name was Thomas Reddy. Is it possible to find what church this Reverand was from?

I wish I could upload the photo of the bible, but it says the file exceeds the maximum file size.

  • The Presbyterian Historical Society keeps a record of each of their Ministers careers. I suggest you e-mail them to see if they can confirm where Rev Thos Reddy served.

If, instead, the Minister were Church of Ireland, then you could do the same thing by e-mailing Lambeth Palace as they have similar records of all their Rectors & Vicars in Britain & Ireland.

  • A Thomas Reddy in listed in the Ecclesiastical index in Thom's 1852 Directory as a member of the clergy of the Established Church (Church of Ireland), in the Diocese of Derry, post town Coleraine. The parish listings show him as a curate based at Aghadowey benefice, with the incumbent at that time a Robert P. Alexander.

  • Thank you all for your replies, they all helped me. I have contacted the Presbyterian Historical Society and they have no record of Thomas Reddy, but they pointed me to the St. Guaire Church of Ireland - Aghadowey as ultimo01 has noted. They said he was a curate at this church from 1845-1867. I have just emailed St. Guaire Church of Ireland and hope for a reply. My 4th GG father James Logan married Susanna Moore. His son Henry Logan married Margaret Moore. Henry's son Thomas Logan married Sarah Arthur. (both born in Ireland, married in Canada). Sarah Arthur's father was married to Sarah Moore. This makes me believe that the Moores, Logans and Arthurs all lived near eachother in Ireland and if I can find one family it may help me find the other two.

  • I just Googled Rev Thomas Reddy...Here's what came up!

" The civil parish of Termoneeny (believed to mean the rock of Heaney) has the village as its main population settlement. The parish is geographically one of the smallest in the diocese of Derry and Raphoe, and comprises the following townlands:

    • Mullagh
    • Knocknakielt
    • Carricknakielt
    • Derganagh
    • Cabragh
    • Lurganagoose
    • Broagh
    • Lemnaroy
    • Ballynahone Beg

Termoneeny parish church, which has occupied its current site in the centre of the village since 1801, is an attractive listed building surrounded by mature woodland, and is dedicated to the honour of St Conlus, who is reputed to have been a 5th Century brass worker from the nearby parish of Tamlaght O'Crilly. However, despite extensive research, no firm record of him has been produced. It has been suggested, although it is obviously far from certain, that St Conlus may be a variation on the name of the much more famous St Columba. The oldest gravestone in the churchyard dates from 1859. At least three former rectors of the parish are buried in the churchyard:

    • Rev Henry Colthurst (rector 1862–1875)
    • Rev Thomas Reddy (rector 1875–1884 )"

I just came back from Derry, Ireland and points south searching for relatives and was at both churches in Aghadowey.  I have pictures of both churches.

    Regards
