Hello,
I am trying to find out more about my husband's great grandfather. His name was Roland Howard PEGLEY, and according to his military record in New Zealand he was born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland in 1848. His occupation was listed as a Tinsmith.
He was sworn into the New Zealand Armed Constabulary Force in 1868, so obviously arrived here sometime around or before this date. We have been told that he apparently came to New Zealand via Australia. Roland remaind in New Zealand and went on to marry in 1878 and had 10 children. We have almost no information through the family as my mother-in-law as orphaned as a child and was then fostered out, so never had the advantage of family stories.
Unfortunately I haven't been able to find out any more about his background but would love to find out more about where he came from and what family he left behind etc.
I would really appreciate it if anyone could help me with finding more informaton.
Many thanks,
Robyn

Hi Robyn
Thank you very much for your message.
Pegley is a very unusual surname. Using the Irish Times surname search engine no results were returned for the surname Pegley in mid 19th century Ireland and only one record exists for Pegly.

Do you know of any possible variations on the surname?
I did a search for Pegley in Derry at familysearch, here is what came back:
I do not know if any of these results are relevant to you.
Perhaps it may be an idea to contact Derry Genealogy for assistance. Hopefully as it is such an unusual surname they may be able to find some church records easily enough. However a fee may apply for their services. Here is their email: genealogy@derrycity.gov.uk
Sorry I couldn?t be of more assistance.
Best wishes,
