My maternal grandmother was  Mary Jane Quin, born in Cork about 1865, married in England in 1889. Her father's name was Richard, occupation "gentleman" and her mother's name was Nora (Hanora perhaps). She had an elder sister Rosanna, born about 1860. Richard left his family and became a "Master of a Benevolent Institution" in Australia.

After many hours of searching, I have been unable to find any Irish records relating to the above.. Can anyone help, or perhaps direct me towards specialised help - not necessarily free.

Unless I can make some progress soon, I am afraid that the search will have to be abandoned because of my age.

  • Hello,

Would you let us know the name of MJ's husband? her children?

Did her mother and sister also go to the UK? Or did they remain in Ireland?

Did her sister marry and if so what was her married name?

Do you have a document giving the names of MJ's parents?

Where did the information about master of an institution come from?

Thank you! Hope we can help.

  •  Many thanks.

MJ's husband was Robert McCall, they both died in the UK. Her children were  Robert, Nora Rose and Frederick, all born  and died in the UK

Her mother remained in Ireland, although she must have visited at least once as she is in the  1901 Census with MJ (MJ's husband is not listed as he was in the Merchant Navy and, therefore, presumably, away at sea).,

Her sister lived in England and died there.

The only information which I have is MJ's Marriage (which gives the info on her father) and Death Certificates and Rosanna's death Certificate.

The info on the  Benevolent Institution is noted on Rosanna's death Certificate and was known by my mother (MJ's daughter). There was some suggestion that he returned from Australia but I have no evidence of this. It was also said that he was in the Metropolitan Police Which one?) before he went to Australia.
