My great-great-grandfather Jeremiah Murphy, 35, emigrated to Ontario, Canada from Kilshannig parish, Mallow, County Cork in 1825 as part of the Peter Robinson settlement. In the 1825 group of impoverished tenant farmers from the area south of the Blackwater River were 313 families - 2010 people. Jeremiah and his wife Susan, 30, and two children Charles, 8, and John, 5, sailed from Cobh, Cork on the ship Brunswick and arrived at Quebec in June 1825. The small family settled on west 1/2 Lot 19, Concession 11 of Emily Township, east of Lindsay, Ontario and northwest of Peterborough, Ontario. The city of Peterborough, Ontario is named for PETER Robinson and the groups landed at 'The Depot' on the west shore of the Otanabee River, then known at 'Scott's Plain'.

They homesteaded there by building a small log shanty and clearing 5 acres of land on the shores of Pigeon Lake and as a result were conveyed the 100 acre parcel of land by a Crown Patent in 1837.

Susan Murphy died sometime before 1835 at which time Jeremiah married a neighbour woman Eliza Lyons, [Lines], who had also emigrated aboard the same ship. Eliza, 19 years his junior, bore Jeremiah 3 sons, Thomas [1837], William and Jeremiah Jr. My great-grandfather Thomas Murphy moved from Emily township to Brechin, Ontario and purchased a farm there in 1868.

Thomas built a log house and barn in Mara Township near Brechin and had 5 children, one of which was my grandfather, Thomas Murphy Jr. The father of 12 children, his eldest daughter, Helen Murphy, [1914-1994], was my mother.

Although I have been successful in tracing my Murphy forebears in Canada forward to the present after their emigration in 1825, I have not been able to trace any of the family who remained in Ireland despite considerable searching around Kilshannig, Bweeng, Drommohane, Monanveel, Glantane and Lombardstown, Co. Cork.

  • Hello Richard,

It appears we are cousins. Your grandfather Thomas was brother to my great grandmother Catherine Mary (Murphy) Harrington.

Unfortunately I am also stumped on our Jeremiah Murphy.

Would love to hear if you come across anything!
