I am trying to trace my family history in Kanturk Co Cork, My great grandfather Jeremiah Lehane was born there in aprrox 1860 and my Great Grandmother Cathrine Sheehane was born in  approx 1866. They left Kanturk some time before 1892 and came to Australia and married in April 1892. Jeremiah's parents are listed at Timothy Lehane, farmer and his mother is Mary Shehane.

Cathrine's parents are listed as being Patrick Sheehan and Johanna Callahan also from Kanturk

Looking for any information

  • Hi Sue,

I have  been doing a bit of research on your family, and Im just wondering both sides of your family, Lehanes and Shehans came from Kilroe?  There are no records of Lehanes in the Tithe Applotment Books for that area.  You mentioned that Timothy Lehane was a farmer, so I was hoping to find a lead there.  However there are records of Michael Shehan Grenane Kilroe ,Dennis Shehan, Grenane, Kilroe, and Patt Sheehan, Grenane KIlroe on the Tithe Applotment Books of 1833.

    http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/results.jsp?surname=&firstname=&county=Cork&townland=Grenane&parish=Kilroe&search=Search&sort=&pageSize=&pager.offset=10

Also in Griffiths - Valuation 1847-1864 there are records of Sheehans.

Mary Sheehan, Grenane St. Lower, Kilroe

Denis Sheehan, Grenane St. Upper, Kilroe

    Jeremiah Sheehan, Knocknacolan, Kilroe

Also the 1901 Census there is a record of a Margaret Lehane.  This is the only record of Lehanes that I have come across.  There is no townland of Kilroe listed in the Kanturk area in the 1901 Census which I am a bit puzzled about, and must look into.

I hope this information will be of help.  Let me know if the Lehanes originated elsewhere, and I will have another look.

  • hi Doreen,

Sorry or the very very slow reply, I have managed to do a bit of research myself and found a little information. My Great Grandmother Johanna Sheehan from what i can tell arrive in australia in 1885 with the rest of her family including parents arriving the following year. From what i have managed to work out my great great grandparents Patrick Sheehan born approx 1826 and Johanna Callahan ( also spelt Callaghan) born 1836/37.  On Johanna's death certificate they have her parents listed as Cornelius Callaghan and Ellen Winter.   I have found records that Patrick and Johanna's children baptised in Kanturk, Cathrine was the eldest born 14th October 1865, Ellen 26th November 1866, Cornelius 2nd May 1868, John 20th Feb 1876 ( John did not arrive in Australia so I am assuming he died while still young) there is a Patrick born in approx 1881 who arrived with them but i can not find any record of his baptisim.

From the Lehane side I can not find any records, their marriage certificate (Jeremiah and Cathrine's) says they both came from Kanturk. Jeremiah arrived in Austalia in 1882, he had  three maybe four brothers that followed, Owen, Cornelius, John T and possibly Timothy. Their parents are listed as being Timothy Lehane and Mary Shehane.

Hopefully this information will help a little.

    Regards

    Sue

  • My GGGrandfather was Jeremiah Lehane who was born around 1860.  He came to the US and married Mary OKane here.  Family just knows he was from Cork, and that his ancestors were of CastleLyons.  They married in the US.
