I am searching for my great-grandfather, John Doyle.  He was born in County Cork 11 Jul 1840.  That is all I know.  His death certificate gives his father's name as John Doyle and his mother as Sarah Doyle.  I don't think this is right as the information was given by his granddaughter and those were the names of my great-grandparents (her grandparents).  My John Doyle married Sarah Fury from County Galway in New York so there isn't a marriage record in Ireland for them.  I don't know if he had any siblings but as he was Irish I would believe he had quite a few siblings!!  Can anyone help me, perhaps there is a birth record or a baptismal record?  All I know:

John Doyle b 11 Jul 1840   County Cork

Arrived in USA   1854

I don't know if he came directly to the US or is he came in through Canada.  Every census he appears on is in New York, Rockland County and usualy Nyack.

Thanks in advance for any help.

  • Hi Mary www.irishgenealogy.ie has a baptism record for a John Doyle Diocese Cork & Ross Parish SS Peter & Paul. 11th October 1840 Parents John Doyle & Ellen Demphy (think this may be Dempsey)

May I ask how you arrived at his date of birth as Civil Registration wasnt introduced in Ireland until 1864 so he would not have had a birth Cert - maybe he had a Baptismal Cert. Also on his Death Cert it states his Mothers maiden name as Sarah Furey. Regards Frances

  • Hi Frances,  thank you for your reply.  I got John Doyle's birth date from his death certificate and his headstone.  The death certificate says his birth date was 11 July 1846 but his headstone say the year of birth was 1840.  His granddaughter gave the information for the death certificate and I think she gave wrong information.  In the New York census his age is shown as 76.  The census was taken in June so if the baptism record you found is for him the October 11th date would be correct and the year of birth would be 1840.  However the 1880 U.S. census shows his age as 38 which would make the birth year 1841 or 42.  The death certificate was issued in Nyack, New York and as I said before, the information given to the undertaker was provided by his granddaughter.  I think she gave his name, John Doyle, as his father's name and his wife's name, Sarah Fury, as his mother's name.  I can't prove that but it seems odd that his parents names would be the same names as his own and his wife's name.  That baptismal certificate you found may be his.

  • Hi Mary you cannot rely on ages given on Census especially for people born early 1800's in Ireland. Often people didnt know their correct age and it was "guesswork". I agree that the info on Death Cert is an error.  Good luck with your search - Frances
