Hello,

I will be visiting Co. Clare this late April 2013 and will be exploring Tulla, Affick, and Tyredagh Upper where my ancestors lived.  I descend from the Morey family, which was also sometimes spelled Moray (on census reports) and the Torpey family (sometimes spelled Torpy).

I can't find any funeral records, and I'm wondering how I go about finding where these family members might be buried.  In the 1800s, would poor tenant farmers have had headstones?  I'm guessing not.  But I'm guessing that the Church would have recorded their burial locations...?  Any information about how burials were handled back then would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does anyone know of the "Torpey House" that is located in Maghera?  I've heard that there is such a place, but I don't know what it is - guesthouse, private residence, historic place, etc.

I have heard that there is a Torpey's Pub in Tulla, so you can bet we'll be visiting there.  Does anyone have any information about the Torpey family who started or still owns/runs this pub?

I'm so appreciative of any answers that I might receive in advance of our trip there this spring.  Thank you so very much!

Specifics:  My great grandmother was Catherine Torpey (who married John H. Morey), b. 1872 in/near Tulla, Co. Clare.  John H. Morey was b. 1871.

John H. Morey's father was Michael Morey, b. 1831 and d. 4 Feb. 1917 in Affick.  He was married to Catherine Powell, b. 1836 and d. 9 May 1901 in Tyredagh Upper.  I know that Michael and Catherine lived in Affick as well.

  • Hello:

Thank you for your query.  Indeed there are descendants of both families still living in the area.  Torpey's pub was sold several years ago and is now the local butcher shop.

I am not aware of a "Torpey House" in Maghera but I will ask a local person for you.

As for burial records, unfortunately there are not any registers as such, but we have just completed a project through the Courthouse committee called "Historic Graves".  We have photographed every headstone in the graveyards in Tulla.  These can be viewed online on the website:  www.historicgraves.ie./Tulla Clare.  In addition, we are in the process of recording all headstone inscriptions.  There are some Torpey headstones that are already done and online.

We would be delighted to meet you when you come to visit Tulla in the spring.  If you let us know when you intend on arriving in Tulla, we would be happy to show you around.  You can email us at tulla@irelandxo.com with your plans if you wish.

If there is anything further that you need, please let us know.

  • Hi Jane!

Interested in your reference to marriage of Michael MOREY to Catherine POWELL (1836-1901).

I have information about POWELLs of Affick and Tyredagh who emigrated to Victoria, Australia.  Happy to exchange information.

    Please email me at dasmurphy@hotmail.com.

  • My spouse & I were in Tulla in 2008 and, if my notes are correct, we visited Libby FLOYD in MOREY's pub.  Maybe it is one and the same place that you refer to as TORPEY's pub??.

Anway, we spoke to Libby and she listed for us her descendant line from Mickie MOREY and Kitty POWELL (presumably your Michael and Catherine) as follows: (1) Pat MOREY and Kate KINNANE, (2) Johanna MOREY and Tom FLOYD, (3) Patrick FLOYD and (4) Libby FLOYD.

Hope Libby is still there when you visit Tulla.
