We live in New Zealand and are trying to locate our Irish Forebears.

I understand the O'Brien family came from O'Callaghan's Mills, my father  John Martin O'Brien was born in Timaru, New Zealand to John O'Brien and Norah Murphy, John is the son of Michael O'Brien and he married a Mary Walsh and I have been told he was a shoe maker.    The family left Ireland in the late 1800's and went to England but stayed in Wales for a time.    The Sexton family we know nothing about except on Patrick/John Sexton Marriage Certificate it was written he came from County Clare.   Patrick/John Sexton appears to have used both christian names during his time in England.    So much help is needed please.

Please let us know anything you might consider to be of interest to us.

Thank you in advance for the help we are sure to get to help us trace our "roots".

This is on the other side of the county from  O'Callaghan's Mills but should be worth checking out.

  • Hi Sue and Gerald:

Many thanks for your query.  I have gone one line to the Clare County Library website www.clarecountylibrary.ie.  they have very good resources for family  research.  I have found a Michael O'Brien with a wife, Margaret and son, Matthew in the DED of East Clare and the townland of Fox and Geese.  They are listed as boot makers.  This area is in O'Callaghan's Mills, and it would appear that it could be your relations.  If you want to research further back, you can go to the library website and try the Griffiths valuation, and the Tithe Applotment books.  In addition, there are donated materials from a number of people on the website and births and marriages for O'Callaghan's Mills are there.  You may also have some luck in looking at donated graveyard transcriptions there or in Tulla.  Tulla's are at www.historicgraves.com.

If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.

    Kind regards,

    Jane

  • Hello,

I am also from New Zealand and am working with my cousins in tracing the family of Michael and Mary O'Brien nee Walsh.  My grandfather was Michael O'Brien, one of three? sons born in Ireland prior to Michael and Mary coming out to New Zealand. I have the information regarding Michael and Margaret O'Brien nee Liddy and their son Matthew. This Michael as we understand it was the brother of James O'Brien who was in turn our Michael's (senior) father. We have had extensive searches done for any other O'Brien's in the area of O'Callaghans Mills and Fox and Geese, but sadly records have been lost or destroyed or never made in the first place. We can find no trace of James O'Brien's death. Michael and Mary's MC list his father as James O'Brien and Mary's father as Thomas Walsh. Unfortunately neither mother is listed. We understand that Mary Walsh originally came from Waterford. Michael and Mary immigrated to New Zealand and settled in Ngapara where they raised another 9 children. Again it is unfortunate that Michael's death certificate does not list his parents names, nor does Mary's.
